Subaru Liberty service codes

Whilst in the process of selling the Liberty someone has pointed out to me the service codes that can be read using the "Engine Warning" light. Apparently by connecting two wires under the dash, and counting the number of long and short flashes you can tell if there are any problems with the car, such as sensors.

I'm going to have a look at this tommorow, but has anyone heard of this, or know any of the codes? The car is a 1999 Liberty 2.5RX.
