Noooooo!
Not 5th!!!! It's the weakest gear in the 'box.
It's only held on with a puny circlip.....
Use 3rd instead

Definitely correct use 3rd, according to GearboxMan who re-con & uprate these Borg Warner T5 'boxes. 5th gear is the weakest link in many ways - I know from personal experience as 5th broke up rather noisily in my Cerbera on the M-way.

Playing the devils advocate, why would the manual not recommend using 3rd instead of 5th then (from someone who has been using fifth for quite some time!)

Hmmmmm!
Why would the manual recommend running in the engine in a certain way, when countless customers did as they said and still had a knackered engine for their troubles?!?! I've worked extensively with these 'boxes in my capacity as a dyno. test inspector and you've got someone who re-conditions them for a living telling you what's for the best three posts up!
You want to use 5th - fine.....don't come whingeing on here if it all goes tits-up.......

At the risk of beng totally corrected by someone who know's what they're talking about, I thought the whole point was to engage the synchromesh to enable reverse to be selected. As such as the clutch is not released until the stick is in reverse surely it wouldn't matter which gear is used? I have always used 5th both in the Chim and now in the T2S but will use 3rd as a precaution following the earlier post. Any one got anything scientific?
