I'm working away and my pc is clicking away like buggery, suggesting that some sort of activity is going on, but I don't know what.

I seem to recall I could type a word or phrase into the Run box to see what processes are running, but can't remember what.

Any ideas, guys?

win XP ctrl-alt-del pops up the task manager. Select the 'applications' tab to see what programs are running. Select the 'processes' tab to see whats taking up your processor time - hint - click twice on the CPU column title to sort the processes into CPU utilisation order.

and then use this site to find out what the processes are for eg. 'svchost.exe'

Thanks guys. It turned out it was the AVG antivirus programme having a scan for no reason that I was aware of.

Cheers guys.

AVG schedules itself to do one either on boot or at about 13:00ish every day. Pull up AVG's control panel and either disable or jiggle the shedule to suit your needs.
