So, the father in law is round on christmas day, joining in the drinking and general festivities. No problem there, until all hell breaks loose.

The guy is generally fine, knows all about cars but knows everything. yes Get the picture ?

As I touched glass with lips for the umpteenth time, the conversation took a swift diversion from the Vicar of Dibley to TVR. confused

Like a lightening bolt to my head, this chat turned my calm head into a simmering pot of anger and resentment.

"I was talking to somebody with a Porsche, the other day. Owned it for 15 years you know? He says he's never had anything go wrong with it" was the opening line of this deliberately far fetched attempt at suicide.

I declined to reply as my misty head was not too misty to calculate where this conversation was heading.

He mentioned to the guy that I had a TVR. Then took delight in telling me that he'd told him I'd had loads of trouble with it this year. Porsche man replied (apparently) with "Oh, they are always going wrong"

"He's never had a problem with his Porsche" was the next one line probe into my temper bank.

My reply was swift but reckless - "I've not had a problem with mine". Now we both know that this is technically incorrect. I've had a new camshaft and front wishbones.

I had to confirm that general maintenance and servicing were not 'problems'. But as the guy knows jack shit about cars, it didn't register. He continued to flood my head with toxic statements such as..

"But yours is always being repaired" and "Its been off the road for weeks this year" and things that roughly translated meant "Oh - and your TVR is a bag of shite"

Saddened by this barage of abuse, I left the conversation with a simple "So, go on then. What problems have I had?" knowing he didn't know and wouldn't be able to answer.

I didn't even venture as far as asking what kind of Porsche it was, as he wouldn't know. I dare say the Porsche has never been near a track in its life, driving his car like it was his last day. I also dare say his Porsche cost a hell of a lot more than my TVR, even with the costs of ownership calculated in. All this assuming '15 year of trouble free motoring' man uses the bloody thing.

You see, my point is that with all the current bad press about TVR's non-future etc etc on top of the old unreliability nametag, even brain dead knowallitalls are free to chip in where they feel the need. And it pisses me off.

And, for the record - the man in question drives a Peugeot 207. Into roadsigns on roundabouts. Where there was no other traffic around on a clear road one night. He is adamant that slow is the way forward. Good job, slow obviously prevents hideously laughable accidents then does it ?

Lazy, at least your F-I-L knows it's a TVR. My neighbour (we work at the same company) tells all my colleagues how we travelled to work today in a TR7

Know what you mean....

I was fitting as set of Magnecors this morning when the next door neighbour walks over..."Problem?"..

His next sentence is "saw your car at the garage two weeks ago".... - annual chassis clean and wax oiling.

gggrrrrrrrr

Nothing but the green-eyed monster. Everyone knows that Porches are (in general) sports cars for the unimaginitive/those lacking in car knowledge...

I just let people get on with it, safe in the knowledge that they'll NEVER have the same feeling of pure unadulterated pleasure that I get when I hear that V8 bark into life (and I feel sorry for them)...

Just nod and tell him you intend to buy a Porsche when you're old and can express your gay tendencies openly.

Porsche's are for poseurs. TVR's are for enthusiasts. Simple as that.

I agree. If you know nothing about cars you'll head for Porsche, because if you love cars you look for something worth while owning and becoming involved with, i.e. a TVR or such like.

For the record in 7 years of TVR ownership I've only had a starter motor fail. I always think of my TVR's as bullet proof.

Hi Jon

I get this all the time & tend to just laugh at whoever is telling me that their mate down the pub knew somone whos budgies hamster had one once & it broke down all the time.

Our man with the Porker knows diddly squat about TVRs as he doesnt own one, you do, so rejoice in the fact.

Take your father in law for a blast in the car & scare the crap out of him - that'll shut him up been there, done that - worked a treat

Ha ha. I read with total interest to all comments. The amount of crap people talked about when TVR hit the news that ugly week. I got prat after prat trying his damdest to wind me up. and offer me £500 cash for my T350 in a bid to piss me off!!! Nob heads the lot of them..........

My Father in Law actaully LOVES my T350c and actually loves it so much he recently took photos and sent it to all his family (most in New Zealand) just so they could see whay my car is and how awsome it looks. He has never given me any greif at all. Probably cause he knows what side his daughters butter is spread on, i hope anyway!!!!!

Keep smilin all, we own simply the most awsome machines this country has ever produced. You name me a car which is so unique like ours. Forget it Noble, your cars look like pethetic Tonka toys and have Mondeo engines. Nuff said.....

TVR RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

You should've taken your drink off him & chucked him out in the cold.

My brother had a Porsche. In the garage every 6 weeks (no exaggeration here) 'being tuned. Broke down 7 times in one month & the Targa top leaked like you were sat under Niagara Falls. His face was rage

My Tasmin 200 is used as a daily drive, has no choke but always starts. It is serviced at a garage once a year, TLC given by me.
It runs like a rocketship & the Targa top leaks like you were sat under Niagara Falls. My face? of course!

Funny - sounds like my Father-in-law too!! Knows everything about everything! rolleyes

Had to endure all sorts of crap on Boxing day (in my house, fuelled by my booze I might add!!) ranging from how TVR wasn't a 'proper' car manufacturer to how everyone with a mortgage was a moron!!

...this coming from a bloke that has no pension / savings to speak of and spent the last 15 years of his working life doing a sh*tty job he hated just to get a pittance behind him...

Bitter - me?

I need worry no longer anymore as I am no longer the only "sports car driver in the village".

The chap at the top of the lane has revived his 1998 lotus Esprit V8S - now that has been unreliable -so stationary that grass had grown on the window seals and the tyres perished. tumbleweed

No one laughs when the RV8 fires up, just no one but I have to admit, the God of TVR starts does received a few muttered words of gratitude.clap

Its only jealousy you know. I get it at work from the Chavs with the saxos/novas/puntos/ and a couple with cozy Escorts/Sieras etc etc.
I have now taken them all out in my T350c, and basically frightened the sh*te out of them, they all now have a differant view on TVR's
So take him out on a nice dry straight bit of road, and do likewise.
Works every time.
Oh one other thing...I took my boss out who has a BMW M5. He don't boast how quick his Beamer is any more, any ideas why?scratchchin
