Hi guys
Am looking to buy my wife a macbook - it is her birthday soon
But i know that ilife etc and OS X 10.5 are due out soon as well

I will not wait for these updates if they will be ages (and accept that computers are always going to be updated) - but would be pissed if I bough the mac next week, only to find out that the new software will ship this month!

Will delivery dates be announced at the big gathering on Jan 9th?

Any help is appreciated

Given Windows Vista goes live to the GP at the end of Jan, I can see Apple announcing theirs being available on the 9th or towards the end of February if it's not 100% ready to go.
Chances are there's new hardware, and if correct, the new OS (when there is one of course) is launched along with it.

iLife is likely to get an update at Macworld in a couple of weeks. 10.5 is still stated as "spring 2007" so unlikely to be announced (and certainly not shipping) at the same time.

Macbooks themselves got an update to Core 2 Duo in November, so very unlikely to get any update at Macworld.

Cheers lads - help is much appreciated
Any chance Apple would upgrade me to ilife 2007 when its out if we bought a Macbook next week?
I doubt it - but just asking?!
Am most keen about the supposed improvements to iweb - missus wants to create blogs etc

AFAIK they don't do an upgrade program on iLife as they do with the OS, so I'm not sure if they would upgrade you, worth checking with Apple though.

Personally, even if I were buying now I'd wait a couple of weeks, you never know, but otherwise I'd say the MacBook is a safe buy, it was upgraded to the Core 2 Duo very recently, and had hard drive and memory bumps.

However, if you can wait, like me, I'd wait until post 10.5. As its for a birthday though, this might not be an option.

Given that Vista will dominate the news in February, I would also suggest that on the 9th Jobs will say either:
- In the shops at midnight (unlikely)
- Available March, perhaps even April - but to spoil Vista's party, here's a few more clues.
Either way, I'd suggest you wait until the 9th, where there's a fair chance you'll see dates. If necessary, it's probably worth explaining the SWMBO why you want to wait.

One other tip, on the off chance that the laptops get a major upgrade: If delivery is quoted as 28 days, don't believe it. It really means "not in the country yet" and Apple have been caught out a couple of times by this. As it's a present, make sure it's available now, or look at outdated stock.
