I've (almost certainly) decided to buy a 1992 92,000 mile Griffith 430. For a fourteen year old motor it's v. good (interior, exterior and chassis appear excellent) It goes, sounds and looks glorious!- my primary concern is that it periodically ticks over at 2-2,500 RPM. Usually a blip or two of the throttle and it drops back to 800-1,000, but not always. The guy selling it says he's replaced the stepper motor and the usual remedies but this niggle has remained - he's just accepted TADTS.
It'll drive me bonkers! I have time to get it right but not unlimited money - is it potentially expensive or 'just' a matter of fiddling with many 'things' until I find the right one? (Apologies for getting a bit technical there...).

Loads of info on stepper motors in the search system. Lots of info on poor idle, the above recomends to disconect.

Does the car have a system which senses load?
Forgive me buy I am not overly familiar with the vehicle.
Some cars have these for Air con PAS etc so thatthe engine speed is kept even when a load is applied.
If there is a wiring problem giving a false load signal te management will compensate for a load which does not exist.
Also an air leak of un-metered air into the inlet can cause similar symptoms, even a leaking beake servo.
What sealing is there for the stepper motor?
ws the seal or gasket replaced?
Check all the vacuum hoses around the engine,
