Track day silencers
Discussion
I've got a turbocharged car that I'm wanting to use on track, only it's a bit loud. So I have a track day silencer that takes my 3 inch exhaust down to about 1 3/4 inches and makes it quite alot quieter. Only thing is I'm a bit worried about thrashing it with this on - obviously I'll take quite a hit in power, but is there any chance of turbo damage with this restriction? (I'm guessing the turbo could run quite a bit hotter)
I can't quote facts or figures but at a guess I would think.
1. The restriction will almost prevent the turbo from spooling at all and the loss in power will be so great as to not make it worth while going out onto a track.
2. The restriction will produce a lot of heat which could do other damage.
If you find a magic answer let me know as my Ultima is 104db so no chance of me getting out there. One owner put restrictors on the tailpipes and the heat nearly melted the rear clip.

You can get small gains just by adding restrictive inserts and so on, but I think for substantial extra silencing without backpressure you simply need silencing volume. I've seen some very effective silencers that consisted of an ordinary back box mounted sideways under the rear bumper with the weight taken by straps. This was enough to get a Very Loud V8 wedge through some pretty tight noise checks, and I would have thought the inherent silencing from your turbo would mean you're facing a much simpler problem.
