Can it be turned off for a child seat in the front?

I need a small cheap fun car to go to work and back
(10 mile round trip) and the MX5 fits the bill. But and it is a big but!! Once a week I will need to to pick my daughter up from the child minder as my wife has to work a bit later and hence put her in a child seat in the front. So I would like to know if the passenger airbag can be turned off.

If not I may have to bin the idea and get a boring hatch. grumpy

I've not checked it out myself, but... I know a girl who wanted to do the same and she sold the car She was told no can't be done you need a forward facing child seat specific for the mx5,.. but mazda had sold out and none were in the pipeline, this was about 6 months ago.

I dare say anyone who's happy with car electronics could disable it...?

I don't think it can be turned off which does seem like something of an oversight on their part.

Have you tried MX-5 Parts?

I think only the re-face-lifted face-lift model (Mk2.5 2003ish onwards) have a passenger airbag that you can disable.
