Rear baby seat - who's actually using one ?

We have a Recaro start behind the drivers seat (without the child seat support bar and only for use with a short driver!), and a Britax Freeway behind the passenger seat (this side does have the child seat support bar).

The set-up works fine. Recaro say the Start does need a front impact support cushion - Recaro say up for children up to 3 years (child seats tend to have 5 point harnesses up to 3 years, and 3 point harnesses after that), and I think it is a little uncomfortable for the child with the cushion - particularly between 12 - 18 months when they just about rest their chin on it. The Freeway is a normal seat, and we use it on our saloon too.

We just had the Recaro for the first child, and despite the cushion, he still adores the car and has spent a full day couped up in the back and only got fed up after about 10 hours.

I don't think Britax make the Freeway any more, so it may not be available for much longer.

Having read all the threads about baby seats, I've just managed to find and buy one of the seats originally designed for the Cerb. Although some people are using the Recaro Start I was concerned with comments that it doesn't fit well in the Cerb rear seat, and tends to push the child too far forward. That wouldn't be a problem for me as I'm a shorty but I was sure there ought to be a better way.

Anyway, I'm hoping to collect me newly-purchased Cerb this weekend so I'll report next week on how the Cerb seat fits and how my son finds it.

No. The original seat is a polystyrene base covered in leather. It's a 3-piece item - there being a base and back (2-pieces) and something which looks and acts as a "thick table". The principle idea behind the "table" being as way of locating the "lap" component of the seat belt over the legs of your nipper, and the secondary idea being to offer a front bolster to help spread the load to nipper's chest in the event of frontal impact.

That 3rd piece doesn't look particularly comfy on first inspection, it's very deep (about chest height on my little boy) but Marek liked it when we played with it in the lounge. He's just 2yo now. We'll try it for real when we've got the car at the weekend.

The Recaro Start is a more conventional seat, similar in design to those we've got in our normal cars.

I'll take some pics of the seat components and how it all fits together this weekend. Marek likes to have his pic taken.

Well i've found one that fits just fine. I think my 7month old will be fine and the front passengers shouldnt really suffer at all.

Its the solofix from argos - they're on offer at the moment too, £30 !

Does that fit behinf driver as well ? It looks like it has a fatter bottom than the recaro.

i have used britax seats and others for my two at 5 and 8. Any car seat leaves them with their legs at an uncomfortable angle, or heads to close to the side of the car. So i just think sod it. Put one in the front on a booster and the other in the back on the normal seats.

Never took my 1 yr old boy driving in the cerb although he does love a good play in the car.

I havent tried the drivers side , but my daughter is fine in the passenger side.

Top right corner of the seat is up against the pillar - but i dont think its an issue - seat is secure and sits in the rear squab ok.

Plenty of leg room - but she doesnt have very long legs yet !

Freeway with a belt tensioner behind the passenger seat. My 2.5 yr old's legs are getting a bit long now, but he puts them either side of the front seat and is OK for at least an hour....
