Saw a rider today stood bolt upright while riding along. Not sure what he was doing as he didn't appear to need any additional observation because he had no overtaking opportunity whatsoever. This was in Spain, BTW.

I was just wondering whether this technique is ever used by advanced riders and, if so, whether it is an approved technique?

Cheers

Never heard of it!

Very occasionally, I sit up in my seat to get a higher view, but only briefly.

However, stiff arms inhibit bike control. It's normally better to have a relaxed upper body. This is because you need to let the bars move freely, so the bike can self-correct as you go over bumps, etc. Stiff arms can even contribute to disaster, such as a tank slapper. So it's generally a bad habit.

not sure about bolt upright, but I thought that police bike riders used a very upright riding position.

"Stood bolt upright" - hot seat perhaps?

The type of bike can influence how you sit. The types of bike that coppers ride, such as Pans and large BMWs, lead to a more upright seating position.

Might have been an old codger like myself , I'm often standing to relieve the ache in my hip joints , and it's handy for removing wedgies.

Must say the pillion gets a little concerned, but it has no effect on the bike whatsoever even at speed.

I'd agree with Freddy on this one, I have been known to stand up on the pegs briefly to stretch my legs... not ideal but it might prevent cramp setting in on a long trip. I'm looking at buying a VFR anyway so its official, I'm getting OLD
