I have a selection of avi files that I want to convert into the right format to watch on my DVD player - so, most likely a Video CD or DVD. Media Player plays them OK, after I downloaded and installed a codec pack. However, Roxio and TMPGenc both say the files are in an unsupported format and won't attempt to convert them. Any ideas?

You could try ffmpeg. Not sure if it is available for windoze (i'm a mac person) but it will convert from/to most things, including DivX, which is probably what the avi is.
There must be other free conversion programs www.winavi.com/avi-to-vcd.htm looks like one possible option.

It's almost certainly a codec issue, but they can be a bitch to sort out.

If windows media player is happy with them, you could do a lot worse than trying the free windows media encoder application.

Nice one, cheers guys. WinAVI seems to have done the trick - it's really fast as well - only took about 25 mins to convert to DVD. Am now burning the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders to DVD, so fingers crossed that will play in my player. Thanks again.
