Hi I currently have a Griff 500 and have been thinking of changing it for a Tuscan but am not sure what to do.
I am able to spend upto 30K but am not sure due to the engine problems that the Speed 6 has has over the past few years.
My problem is the Griff I have is very good and starts and runs with no problems and never has let me down.
Your thoughts on this would be of some help to me.

Hi

I think this is a dilemma that lots of us seemingly "reliable" Griff/Chim owners are facing at the moment. I'm on my second Griff in 3 years having covered 28,000 miles without any breakdowns and the though of giving it up to pay double for my servicing and get the "what was that rattle" voice in my head is a little daunting!

I very nearly changed for a Tuscan last year but the combination of very fidgety handling (18" wheels on early chassis) and rattley engine turned me off. The fact that the car subsequently went pop made me think I'd made the right decision.

BUT - the new TVRs are so fabulous to look at and to drive that as always you pays your money and takes your choice. Even with a question over reliability what else can you buy for £30k that even comes close? I'll need to upgrade sooner or later and I just hope that we'll have a few 50,000 mile plus S6 engines around by then to bolster my confidence.

Best advice is to check the archives, read everything you can, test drive LOTS and then make a choice based upon your own willingness to trade off the good stuff with the risk of the bad.

Oh and get the best warranty you can - think of it as a running expense rather than a luxury!

Hope this helps

Marco

My plan is keep the Griffith - now a classic, and treat it as such, lots ofpampering.

And save up for a tuscan to use every day.

Have got a couple of years to go though.

7 months into winter Tuscan ownership and 4000 mls. No regrets. Yes there have been niggles, but to be fair most queries have been answered on this site. Really comforting to know there are so many knowledgeable and friendly folk out there. Dealer service dept also fantastic, really helpful. Dont let fears of unreliability deny you the driving exp of your life.

They are over the engine problems. It did relate to specific components that were poorly annealed. I can't be bothered to do the full story again as it has been done to death on other threads.

I changed from Chim to Tuscan great car, very reliable and yes I did have rebuilds at Service time. I have confidence in the Sp6 engine, look at its performance in Spa, Sebring on basically a standard engine. I've now got a T350 and am running as an everyday car.

Basic rules are get the newest one money can buy and if it is older makesure it Has had a rebuild and has some miles on the clock since.

I am currently in mid-swap, having partX'ed my chim for an X reg Tuscan. Due to collect this saturday.

I had gone through a sudden but short longing for a T350C, followed by viewing the chim as beginning to look dated and the realisation that Tuscans were within my grasp. I was sold.

Did extensive checking on engine work done, services and additional bits and pieces needed, even to the point i had the dealer question the factory although they are very cagey and reluctant to give out specific info.

Secured a 24 month warranty to boot.
My search criteria were post 12000 mile cars no earlier than Xreg. My car will be Dec 2000 giving a reasonable usage ie approx. average of 500 miles a month.

Having seen a number of sub-5000 mile cars about at the same age, 2 years or so, i felt they had plenty of scope for problems.

I really, really wish that was the case. I agree this has been done to death, but unfortunately I have first hand experience of a newer (Aug 2002, 3.6L) engine going pop at 4100 miles (And yes I have always carefully warmed it up, checked fluids, etc.) I never got a full answer out of TVR as to what went wrong, although they did, unsurprisingly, mention finger followers. (Have also heard of several other recent engines expiring)

Must agree with Fish, the reliability of speed6 engines has been done to death by us the customers. Isnt it about time TVR made some sort of official statement as this crops up time and time again. Lets put it to bed once and for all for existing and potential owners?
