First of all - Happy New Year to you all.

Well the four of us, as promised have sat round and reviewed the pictures and we're in agreement with the results.

I seperately emailed Mrs H last week as I couldn't see the picture, I've not a had a response so we've missed out on a picture that could have won.

In Third place we have UKBob's Big Apple (it was a close run thing and we had to include input from a nine year old on the final decision.)

In Second place we have doodah's Physco.

In first place with a unanimous decision is te51cle's Murder on the Orient Express.

It had all the elements of the movie.. The knife, the old woman in a tweed coat, the blood, the train and the B&W element made it an excellent entry and we feel a worthy winner.

I don't know how you felt this worked and I'ld appreciate any feedback on if it was good / bad / indifferent or whether we should.

2 and 3 I can understand - 1 was a very clever interpretation (and classic Bob...I swear that man has a food fixation! ), 2 was a clear copy but very well executed (no pun).

1 though...no offence to te51cle, but it was far more of a photoshop creation than a photograph, and I thought this was to be a photo competition, not a photoshop-skills competition? There is nothing wrong with some post-capture processing to tidy a photo up before presentation, but that is something completely different. I'm sure I read the same debate last year when I was watching the comps not entering.

But ultimately your competition, your judging/your rules.

(And no, not sour grapes...I enter these for fun, as there are some far better photographers on here than me.)

Edited to re-number as I completely misread the results!

Congratulations to the 1,2 & 3 - good images - and infact all entries.

I would also sugest to keep any photo editing to a min (basic colour adjust & cropping) but would be happy to leave the decision to the topic setter as judge in each case.

Thanks guys, I've not won one of these before and I've been bursting with an idea for a round yet have but been unable to put it forward ! I think the title of the Dec 06 competition was one that leant itself to manipulation however my idea is more of a 'capture in camera' one as per the other thread I'll start for it.

Havoc -

Fair enough on the comment about Photoshopped entries - I hadn't seen the other thread that's referred to in your note so was in the dark to any of the background. I would have also assumed that contributors would have also known about any limitations ? Perhaps that should be made clear in the first post of the thread along with the list of previous themes.

If we're taking it to the letter that would also means that Panoramic shots are out as they're a compilation of individuals shots which have been manipulated ?

It is a grey area, I agree...when is Photoshop 'processing' too much and when is it just 'tidying up'?
Panoramics? Assuming it's just stitching, then that to me is not much more 'changing' the composition than sharpening or saturation changes.

As for 'rules'...not a bad idea, either as a sticky or in the introductory post each month. Better yet - a sticky for the standard rules, with any 'deviations' explained by the competition host at the start of each monthly thread. What do people think?

How about a separate comp (no pun intended) for Photoshop creations?

How about a "straight from camera jpg" category. That would also include coversion from RAW files to jpgs.
A little sharpening and colour balance control would be allowed but not to include "composites" etc.

That's all mine have been so far, and I assume most other people's too. The most paint-shopping I've done on any entry has been white balance, sharpening, and maybe some saturation.

Or are some people 'cheating'?!?
