I've just got back into this having recently aquired my TrackIR, which really adds to the experience! Is there anyone else out there who has IL2 and would be interested in an online dogfight? I know there are quite a few plane anoraks on PH
I've also just ordered IL2:1946, which combines all previous editions into one big installation. It also includes some of the experimental German and Soviet planes of the immidiate post war era - like this bizarre 'Lerche' contraption! wobble

I am really, really bad at it though.

I picked up the 1946 version last week. Very good update, its actually more stable than previous versions (some times there were issues on P4 chip machines, usually fixed quickly).

1946 is a good update and the new planes are great fun mostly being experimental jets or Rockets (eg. V-tail Me262, still overheats and cooks its own engines at will). The Russian B6 is particulaly nuts. Similar to the B1 rocket plane but has an extra set of rocket motors on the end of each wing, each one slightly larger than the orignial motor... REAL acceleration when they kick in (about 78% throttle I think?), but not much turning at full throttle and the plane starts to shake itself apart shortly afterwards as it is easily exceeding 700+mph in such a short amount of time you havent noticed nuts laugh

I've been out and bought it today and a joystick - my previous one was a little old and is buried in the loft somewhere. I also bought a decent headset so we can chat in-game (I presume it supports this).

Once I've had a fly around, maybe I could host a little game?

I didn't know there was more than one version! I've got the 1946 one it seems.

The joystick is a Logitech Force 3D jobbie. It seems OK.

So far the biggest problem seems to be my ability in this game. Hopefully multiplayer will be better!

Well 1946 is the version to get as it has all previous releases built in. It's the last one until a whole new series using a new physics and graphics engine is released in November. It's called 'Storm of War' and the first will be 'Battle of Britain'

Reading from the back of the box:

ALSO INCLUDED:
IL-2 Sturmovik : Forgotten Battles
The Ace Expansion Pack
Pacific Fighters

Plus some DVD bits. We should have a go at something this week...

I have Forgotten Battles, so I wonder if planes and maps from that will be compatiable or what? Maybe I should just get the new version (don't play it that much really).

I wouldn't worry adam, I am hopeless. I get lost during the missions and when I finally find my "wingmen" again they've done all the shooting down... and then we go back to base and I try to land... and crash.

I've not really done any of the single player missions, I tend to jump in a cool plane with big guns and shoot up some tanks or bombers using the quick mission builder
What you can do on multiplayer, other than dogfights, is to do a co-operative mission where one player pilots a bomber with another player as his gunner/bombardier and other players as escorting/attacking fighters - could be fun

Ive been keen to get hold of the IL2 1946 - not got IL at all. Hopefully my old Thrustmaster stick will still work - but anticipate having to get another.

Will have a look around for 1946. Would be keen for a PH on line battle. Im in when I get the game and stick.

Is the thurstmaster still the king of sticks?

Use to play Falcon 3 and Micros Flight sim battle of pacific I think many years ago,

If you want to spend £££s then the Saitek X52 Pro looks nice. Not sure if it's available yet though.

I'm around this evening if anyone wants to start a game... just put the server IP or Game name (Plus Password?) up here and I'll have a check back later?
