I did do a search but I came across hundreds of comments hinting at how expensive these cars were to run but no specifics.
What's the reason for this then?

What kind of specifics are you after?

4.5k service intervals can get expensive if you do a lot of miles

Otherwise similar costs to run as an Impreza (except insurance which for me was a good bit higher)

Are the services themselves particularly expensive?
Are cost of parts excessive?
Are there known weak points which seem to break expensively?
Clutch life?
These kind of things.
(Bear in mind I don't automatically know the running costs of an impreza- shame on me )

You need to look after it (obviously), servicing costs £75 for the 4500mile plus £80 for the AYC change (recommended), get an independant specialist in your area, dealers are a rip off.
I've had two, 4 and an 8MR which have both been brilliantly reliable and returning over around 20MPG, it'll do better on a long run though.
I'll be happy to point you in the right direction if you would like more help, brilliant cars all round

Cheers
