Playing iPod Music Without iTunes
Discussion
Does anyone know a good, reliable way of playing music off my ipod, without using itunes.
I work nights, and we have a cracking speaker system setup, which we all take turns plugging laptop's in to, to take the edge of the 12 hour shift.
My laptop only has a 40gb hdd, but the ipod is a 60gb. I want to transfer all of my music onto my desktop (250gb), and use that as the pc to keep the pod sync'd. But - I also want to continue playing music off the pod at work.
I've tried mlpod, the Winamp plugin, and whilst that is good, it does screw the library file on the ipod, so the next time it is sync'd correctly, it has to rebuild, every track on the device.
I've also tried wmpod, the Windows Media Player plugin. TBH, I thought it was really rubbish. And - it doesn't seem to work with wmp11.
So - any other suggestions, or ways around my problem?
Cheers, all.

Cheers for the reply.
Yeah - that is an option, but - i like the ability to manually manage the playlist on my laptop, so a way of plugging the ipod in to the laptop, then playing it out via the laptop would be ideal.
I'd happily use itunes, but it won't touch it because it's registered to my other pc.

Erm... Just install iTunes on the laptop. Assuming you can.
So long as you don't tell the laptop copy of itunes to go anywhere near the iTMS system and to manually manage the music it won't need to 'register' the ipod or anything.
Seriously, I've never had to 'validate' my ipod when going from machine to machine.
ETA: Set to manually manage everything, I can bolt Sadako's 3G device on to my iTunes without any complaints, play music from it, add content without a hitch. It doesn't even complain when I eject that and instantly connect my Video one. I think it might bitch and moan if I tried both at once though... might have to have a go see what happened

Don't understand where you're going wrong on this!
You use your PC with iTunes to hold the music files and sync the iPod with when you need to.
On your or anyone's laptop, you use iTunes, but there's no copying involved no matter the size of HDD.
You simply choose the iPod on the left panel and select the play button in iTunes - hey presto, music played back via iTunes from the iPod.

Cheers, pjskel. You are correct, but (on mine, anyway) when i do that, i am not able to manipulate the playlists in any way. It's almost like have a read-only version.
I'll look into it a bit more, but I appreciate all the comments so far.
