Oil issue - help

Hi all. My car currently has fully synth 10w 40 in it. Needed to top it up & the man said "any good quality 10w40 or 10w50 oil is fine". So I promptly spent 40 quid on 4 litres of mobil1 only to see when I got home that it's 15w50 - DOH!!!
So, if I top up with this will I kill my engine??

sorry, i know this isn't much help here but for £40 i would take it back and get comma lite (fully synthetic) £20 for 5L for topping up between services, I understand that a lot of garages buy this in bulk and use it for there services. I couldn't comment on the different grade though!

It won't kill your engine, but you'd be better of taking it back and changing it for another fully synthetic 10w/40.

The 10W50 rating is the viscosity rating of the oil at 2 temperatures, the 10W is when its cold and the 50 is when its hot (100°
So If you replace a 10W50 oil with a 15W50 oil then all that will happen is the oil pressure when cold will be slightly higher, as the oil is thicker at the cold temp.
This does also mean the oil will not flow into little gaps as readily, so you could compromise the cold start lubrication. But in reality then difference is very slight and I wouldn't worry about it.

I run mine on 15W50 and its fine
