This one might sound a bit strange - but - here goes - has anyone converted an S2/S3 to a cable operated clutch? Reason for asking is that hydraulic operation always seems like overkill to me - more seals and stuff to leak, fail and eventually go wrong.....anyone know why TVR chose to go hydraulic when Uncle 'enry used cable in the Granny? It would also be nice to reduce the weight of the clutch at the same time (wife loves TVR's - lucky me - but hates the clutch... hence she never drives back from the pub...

Thanks for any thoughts...
Phil

My last two M series TVR's have had cable operated clutches. compared to modern hydraulic they are very crude. The effort is higher the take up point is sharper making it more diffacult to launch the car. M serie's cars with TR-6 drivetrain's that use hydraulic clutches are much easier to drive. All IMHO.

TVR used to have cable clutches in the Tasmin - the S's better looking 2.8 predecessor - and guess what, they kept getting compliants about the unreliability and the excessive heaviness of the clutch. So they changed to a hydraulic version.

BTW when a cable breaks you are snookered. When a hydraulic one goes, topping up with fluid will frequently get you home.

Hmmmmm - OK - looks like I'll just start thinking about forking out for a new master cylinder / and/or seals.

Interesting Steve's and other's comments about cable operation on the Tasmin and M series - not my experience with cable operation on admittedly much more humble stuff - Lotus Sunbeam, various VW's etc........I'm afraid can't agree at all about the relative merits of the Tasmin (no surprise in an 'S' fourm).....still, beauty, as they say is......

Oh - one last thing - just had a new hood fitted by David Batty (via his trimmer) EXCELLENT JOB! Thanks David - and very good value too!! Another happy customer.

You want a heavy clutch... try a Mk1 Lotus Europa. Cable of course. The later Mk II went hydraulic.

Steve

Nice April one Steve......must admit tho' that as far as I am concerned it doesn't matter what model it is as long as someone enjoys it - and uses it........

The other 'humble' car just came back to me - my first ever car - Triumph 1300 FWD - hydraulic clutch - heaviest thing ever - also went through rotoflexes like hot dinners....something you might recognise with a Europa - still that's another story.

Nothing comes close to the 'S' so far...unless I can afford a Griff.....
