My apologies if this is has been asked before..

As most of you who travel on the M1 near luton there's the average speed check area through the 25 miles of road works !!

The cameras are all front facing number plate readers. At night do they still work , nightscope flare type lens would be killed with the head lights. Infared lens work on heat sources so again i imagine the hot head lamps would give them problems .

Maybe technology has improved since i did my A level physics.
Wonder if anyone has been nicked with these camera's at night ???

They may well work, but they cant follow you across diffrent lanes-so change lane in between the start and finish.

Why not just drive at the max average allowed?

It's just so stupid! I mean there is nothing more annoying than sitting on a motorway that's had one single lane closed. At 30 in the middle of the night, wight no-one ahead, no-one behind just Big Brother making sure you don't hurt yourself on the safest Dual Carriageway situation you'll ever be in.

While that may have been true now, don't bet your licence on it as you never know if/when SPECs systems will get multi-lane approval.

Fair point, as we had per radar detectors, but as speed cameras make m-way roadworks less safe, they shouldn't have anybody's approval irked

I've got to drive that stretch tomorrow and I guess I'll just re-set the trip computer at the first SPECS camera and hold the max allowed average until I pass the last camera. At least you know for sure that your speed is being checked there, not like the sneaky scam-vans which can be almost anywhere these days.
Anyway, after going up the M1 I can then go home through the lanes where there are never any cameras and it'll be dark, so it can be flat out all the way!

And if they have 3 cameras or more can they measure the average between (for example) 1 & 3?

How come these cameras don't work when changing lanes?
Surely the one camera covers all the lanes simultaneously and matches up the plate whatever lane you're in?

At the moment I don't think so.They appear to just cover one lane.Has anyone seen a pic from one of these?

I believe there is actually a separate camera for each lane of the motorway, and the genius that designed them never thought that people might change lanes? I would imagine its some sort of software issue... well I bet the councils investing in them hope that?!

Dual carriage way - 4 cameras...

They probably can work across all lanes, they're just not approved for evidence capture in that mode of operation.

ah yeah so it seems! I can't remember where I heard/read the specs system just couldn’t cope - did seem bizarre at the time!

Speculating: one of the three sets might be turned off until such time when the works have migrated along the road, then the camera at the opposite end would be disabled; hence a pair will always be operational without the need of continually moving cameras around as the works section migrates.

I’m sure the SPCS system can cope. After the frame grabbers and OCR algorithms have done their job as usual, it’s just a matter of streaming the data from parallel cameras through one software pipe (as if having just one camera covering all lanes). Analysing the data from each pipe pair is a cinch (requires doubling of processing power of those modules, but that’s still relatively insignificant against the amount of OCR processing power).
Perhaps you are thinking of ANPR and the maximum lookup rate from the DVLA database?

I think they know that driving that slowly for that long will cause quite a few people to fall asleep, and they don't want you to hurt yourself too much when you do: hence the limit.

See?

so who's going to volunteer to :
-drive at 70mph through the camera points but change lanes at the start and finish
-drive at 70mph in the same lane but at night with full beam head lights

After 7 days we'll have an answer to the questions :-)
