Is my Plasma Screen HD ready?
Discussion
Ok, I know this might sound like a dumb question...but please bare with me....!
I have just returned from living in the US and whilst there i bought a Plasma screen (back in May 2004).
I deliberatly bought one that would work in both US and UK... the trouble is, I don't know whether or not it is HD ready or not (I wasn't really familiar with the HD term back in 2004).
The screen is a Fujitsui P42VHA30A and I know it has been discontinued now.
It does have a DVI-D socket on the back and some bloke who was supposed to know about this sort of thing said that Yes - this means it will support HD. Problem was he was a spotty kid in an electronics chain shop and I wasn't convinced he knew what he was talking about.
I have a feeling that its not HD - the TV manual states that the number of pixel's that the screen can display is 852(H) x 480 (W). ...and with my limited knowledge I thought HD required more..
Can anyone help?

If its 852x480 then I'm afraid its not.
The 480 is the number of lines, for HD you would need 720 at least.
It may be capable of taking a HD signal over DVI but the set will downscale the image to 480 losing any benefit.

Thanks for the quick reply ...I feared that would be the case.
Ironically it looks like I might end up owning 3 plasma screens now then....
I bought one in 2003 in the UK (for a huge amount of cash) about 3 months before I knew I was going to be posted over to the US) ...and of course that wasn't going to work in the US was it
So when i got to the US I splashed out even more cash on one that would be "future proof" as it would work both in the US and back here. Oh dear.... the electronics industry is just loving me
Cheers
NB - See your only down the road in Windsor and are in the business. Any recommendations on good HD screens (that will hopefully last for a while)... do you fit them as well (need to mount one and hide wires etc!).
Depending on what you are looking for.
The Panasonic 42PX60B at £830 odd is an absolute bargain.
Step up from there Hitachi 42PD9700 at £1150 ish is also great and then up again you are into something like the Pioneer 427XD at £1500 odd
In 50's Pioneer 507XD at a shade under £2K
Or the big 60 in the form of the LG60PY2R at a little under £4K

the two broadcast HD resolutions are 720x1280 (720p) and 1080x1920 (1080i/p).
As far as resolution of an HD ready set is concerned it as to have a vertical res of at least 720 pixels.
The most common display resolutions are 1024x768 (or should that be 768x1024) for plasmas with there non square pixels and 768x1366 (or something very close for LCD's.

Ahh right. So pretty much any semi-modern monitor or TFT on a computer can do 'HD'. Excellent.
Yeah HD isn't all that modern if you're used to using a PC
Although most TFT's monitors are non HD ready. Other requirements are; the support of 50Hz and 60Hz inputs and DVI-D /with HDCP support or HDMI. Most TFT's have DVI-D but very few offer HDCP support. So protected content won't work on most LCD monitors, unless you are pulling off a PC over VGA or a component source and have a component->VGA converter.
Another thing to consider is HD resolutions are 9:16 ratio, not the 3:4, 4:5, 10:16 PC monitors come in
