Sounds like the solenoid is sticking - try a well aimed whack on the starter

If the solenoid is clicking, it's typically the battery. The solenoid switches *click* the large current required or the starter begins to flow, causing the battery voltage to drop. This in turn means there is insufficient voltage across the solenoid's coil to hold it closed and the the solenoid then re-opens, stopping the large current flow to the starter. The battery voltage then climbs again as the draw on it has reduced, enough to switch the solenoid ... cycle repeats. Time to get your battery tested I'd say.
