I doubt if anyone would be stupid enough to be hooning it around SW19, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'll keep an eye out too.

How did they nick it by the way? Were your keys taken?

Stolen between the hours of 1am to 7am last night. The keys are still on my bed side table. I live in a gated development, so they have got in the gates and nicked nothing else, just my car.

Were the gates damaged or have they got in and out cleanly? Perhaps someone else from the development is involved in letting them in.

Anyway, stolen cars are practically currency in my area and I like M3s so I always notice them... in other words, I'll keep a look out just in case.

How do you steal an M3 without the key?....was it SMG - if so the transmission is locked so you would have to lift it wouldnt you?

Break the side window sets off alarm, release brake and winch onto low loader......no key to start it...hot wire supposed to be impossible?

Just rambling but I thought the std routine was to nick the key from the house thesedays?

Taking the keys is only really standard practise in highly organised crime cases.

Taking the keys often (but not always involves) a element of breaking and entering a premises in order to obtain the keys. If caught the punishment is way more severe than that of simply 'hotwiring' off the drive. The punishment gets even more severe when the criminal breaks in whilst the building is occupied.

The lesser criminals know this and therefore stick to a bamboo cane through the letterbox at worst.

Very bad news on the M3, hope insurance hassles will be kept to a minimum. Not a good start to the year.

It is SMG, and im trying to work out how the hell the have nicked it. I only have one key for it and its right here in front of me, also my bedroom is directly above the driveway and if they had to smah something i would have heard.

I hear rumours of crooked dealership people making cloned keys when cars are in for service. Obviously rthey know your address also.

Has the car been worked on recently?

years ago I had a brand new Ford Orion (company car) with deadlocks fitted as std. It was parked on the drive and was nicked. Police said the theives used a pressure devise in the lock that popped the central locking, pushed it down the road and hot wired it! Sounds a bit iffy to me.....Car was found a couple of days later filthy but "OK"......left the company a week later without driving it again...!

I didnt wake up and neither did the dog..incredible how that happens.

Thanks for all the messages guys. Been down to the police station, they told me an Audi was stolen not far from me last night too.

I get my car serviced at BMW in Yorkshire and in Vauxhall depending on where i am. I spoke to the guy who does the work on my car in vauxhall and he told me that without lifting the car (impossible not to wake me so out of the question) they would have had to have had a key. They don't have mine, so someone has probably cloned my key. The last time it was in for service was in Yorkshire about 6 weeks ago, however my car is registered to a flat in Leeds not my address in London, which makes it even move bizarre.

Also just realised that my passport, driving licence, some papers for a property purchase abroad and quite a few work documents are all in the car along with my housemates birth certificate and national insurance card.

This sucks !

Think most gate systems like that are relatively easy to get past if you know what you are doing

If you only have one key then who has the other? They always come with 2 keys...
