Ladies and gents,

The time has come for me to bite the bullet and treat myself to a Hans Device and thus, unfortunately, a new lid.

Flicking through the mail order catalogues there only seems to be one make. Do I need to get it professionally fitted or can I buy mail order ?

Any advise or comments would be gratefully received.

Ta very much.

A friend of mine who races Astons uses a Hans, I think he had to try a few different ones to get one he was comfortable with.

Get the pukka Hans compatable harness also.

Do you mean the harness that attaches to the helmet from the device? If so, these are FIA stamped and mandatory.

I think it’s better if you go and try a few out to see what fits best and what is comfortable. It just varies on your build and neck size. I got mine from Stand 21.
I must say it took me a while to get used to it, was a bit odd to start off with.

The design was patented by HANS, and is licenced to manufacturers. They all bear the label "HANS".

Both Stand 21 and Schroth are licencees. Stand 21 offers more variety; the proper fit varies depending on both width and seat angle (as in, single seaters v touring cars).

Thanks for all your answers, I'll pop along and speak to Stand 21 at the Autosport show.

A Hans device can only be fitted by an approved supplier like DT, GPR or Stand 21. They come typicaly in 3 angles so you need to know what sort of driving you will use it for. Sports/saloon with a normal seat type, Single Seater or Prototype or a real lay back historic, fundamentally speaking on types. Bit more to it than that but you get the jist.

So long as your helmet is current and has Hans holes already in it, they can fit a Hans clamping device to it. Arai Gp5 and 5K models have had these holes as standard for about 3 years. They have a small plastic lug over them before the kit is fitted.

Personaly I think the Stand 21 version is a better design (look at the lip on the shoulder to hold the belts) than the Schroth although arguably the schroth is slightly more universal if you move from car to car. However, they both do exacly the same job ultimately and there is no best or worst with either of these products.

Best advise I can give of all is go to the Autosports showoff and pose next week and take a look at the options then, start haggling. Some companies are supplying the helmet kits free if you buy the Hans from them. Jolly decent of them too for that price!

There are 2 versions - the one made by Scroth and marketed by DT & GPR etc and one made by Stand 21. The differences? probably not much as they are both supposed to be based on the original HANS design. However, the Scroth version has a "non-slip" upper surface whilst the Stand 21 version has raised side retaining lips for the belts. I think that the Stand 21 version is lightly more expensive but its the one I went for as I preferred the idea of the side lips rather than the non-slip version. It seems to me from observation on the telly that most professional drivers use the version with the raised sides. Interestingly, Stand 21 will tell you that there's is the only version approved by HANS in the US as it is the latest development of the original design!

I would not go for a mail order purchase. I was going to, and based on the advertising blurb thought I knew what size and angle I wanted, but when I got to the Autosport show I had a "fitting" with the Stand 21 guys and discovered that I needed a size bigger than I originally thought.

DT & GPR will sell you one over the counter or mail order but Stand 21 will sit you in a seat and advise you on correct sizing and fitting. Seems worth doing to me.

There are also lighter weight pro versions which are predictably more expensive.

...couple of questions.
Why are they so expensive?
As safety devices are they VAT exempt?
