I had my clutch changed at the factory , same as you a 500 griff with a new pressure plate and thrust race the total was 190 pounds , very reasonable .
Are you sure its your clutch that has gone
were there sings of it slipping when driving . sounds like maybe hydraulic failure.
Its not a hard job to change

It sounds very much like your master cylinder has gone not the clutch itself
Thats not the way a clutch plate usually goes
did you notice under hard acceleration in third or fourth that the clutch was slipping revs climbing and no increase in speed , if not then the p+ressure plate and clutch should be ok . check your hydraulics out

definitley sounds like one of the cylinders has packed up. have you checked the clutch level fluid level? Or to see if you are leaking fluid from either. Check the driver's footwell for the master cylinder, and under the gearbox for the slave.
Cost me about £500 for a new clutch last June from an indy.
The thrust bearing was about £120 on its own. Something to do with rocking horses and their poo as I understood it, so the parts co I got it from made a batch.
Everything the car goes to the garage for seems to cost about £500 though. I'm sure the till has just one big button with £500 on it.

The master Cylinder is located in the driver's side bulkhead under a siliconed shut cover, sort of bubble shaped. You'll need to cut the silicone away to get it open. Best thing to do as you may have lost clutch fluid. If the master Cylinder is shot then you usually get the fluid leaking down the shaft and down the clutch pedal. If it's the slave then I can't imagine it being too difficult to replace and rebleed the system. Mind you I havent looked at mine for a while and cant remember if you need to shift the exhaust or not??
paul,just a tip that master cylinder can be resealed is situ working in the footwell just cover the carpets in an old towel ,not hard someone mechanically minded can do this in about 40 minutes inc bleeding(do check the inside of the cylinder for score/wear),if you put your hand on the clutch pedal arm you can usually see signs of the fluid running out of the cylinder if thats your problem,that would explain the soft pedal your actually compressing air thats entered the system(low level)rather than clutch fluid,as the other guys said check the level much cheaper than a clutch,i have the lucus part no for the seal kit if you need it cost about £4 from motor factor,done mine like this 14mths ago good luck.

I've just dug out the receipt. It was £90
My usual policy of 'while we've got it apart what else can/should we replace' applied and in total the bill just for the bits was £154 and that doesn't include the clutch plate which was nearly new.

Yep, just checked £13.09 plus VAT from the robbing main dealer in March!!! Obviously before the great thrust bearing famine of June 06
Just seen £90 still
