My mate has what looks like to me a serious problem with his PC. When it boots up, it goes to the Dell splash screen and then goes to a blue screen with...

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If the problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80E61AC0, 0xC0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Now I selected safe mode on the machine in question but all it did was print out a load of directory info and go back to the error screen. In fact I tried a few options available.

Is it knackered, if not any idea what's wrong with it, and any idea how to fix it? At the moment it won't come out of this blue error screen no matter how many times you re-boot.

Cheers

points to your hard drive being faulty or you controller ,chances are it is the hard drive only way to know really is to get another hard drive and try ,if you have aspare one that is, you could then make this a bootable disk and try to access the other drive and get any data off ,depends how good you are with computers as to how easy it is also you will need a copy of windows or a restore disk to get it working .

After that, assuming it doesn't I'd point him at Dabs, Scan, Novatech and get a new drive. Do the reinstall of Windows and all applications, then, using instructions from the net or that came with the new drive set the old one to 'Slave' and add it to the system. Hopefully Windows will see it and allow you to get data off it.

HDD's are pennies these days.

Of course all that is moot if the thing is under warranty still

Ahem, BOOT from the CD. If he keeps getting that screen he might need to change the boot order.

He has a windows XP CD, but I'm not sure if it's a recovery CD.

That'll do. If it doesn't give the option to go to the Recovery console, tell him to do a 'Repair Install' it's totally nondestructive (unless the drive is too far gone) and will attempt to repair Windows and hopefully the partition.
