I'm in a quandary over buying a LCD/Plasma TV.

It's sales time in shops and online stores, but the sceptic in me believes that all TV's on sale MUST be the rubbish ones they could not sell over Christmas or are run-out obsolete models.

Anyone recommend a really good LCD/Plasma TV that is a genuine bargain in the sales right now? Looking for size of at least 40" and good/high quality.

Sony Bravia, X range. Not in any sales, but a blinding telly. DigitalDirect has the 40" for £1800.

Danny boy.

Simply.

Panasonic 42PX60B

On the wall, a pedestal or its cabinet.

42" HD Ready plasma goodness starting at a meagre £850 rising to a shade under a grand for the cabinet model.

Only very slightly outclassed by the Hitachi 42PD9700 (£1150) on certain feeds and that is only slightly beaten by the Pioneer 427XD (£1500)

Get to it.

What about the Panasonic TH-42PX600B? Seems to get good reviews on which.

Have you got a home cinema amp?

(This is a pertinent question, honest)

Nope. Well, sort of. Got a Home Theatre PC.

Just tried to PM Derestricter but his profile is blank (and says Granville for some reason). Can you PM me his email address - I'd like to see if he can beat the best price showing on Kelkoo.

AFAIK the difference between the px60 and 600 is picture in picture settings, an sd card reader and better in built speakers.

Mr plotloss - you are in the business?? Have you heard or seen of the purple snakes? I ask only as my brother on my recommendation got a px60 just before xmas and I was wondering how common this is? I've heard no mention of it from him so I'm hoping his is not affected otherwise I'm likely to get a kicking. From reading avforum its not looking good as panasonic seem to be giving people the runaround in this country - but there may actually be a firmware fix for other countries. PM me if you feel more comfortable discussing offline

For myself I have always liked the pioneer 436 but haven't seen the new 427 series yet. My TV died on boxing day unfortunately I managed to fix it so plasma has dropped down the money agenda for the moment again

Just go to www.247electrical.co.uk. No sale, just always a nice cheap price. Got my Samsung from them for £750 when the high street were charging £1099 at the time !!!

Prices update almost weekly, in the right direction I may add. My TV (Samsung LE32R74BDX)is now £584 on 247electrical, it is £689 in the sale from Currys website and £799 if you want to buy it in store !!!

Sale prices are still rip off in the high street !!!

Ask them to price match and they say they only do it if cheaper locally, I am pretty sure I cannot get much more local than ordering from the PC in my lounge, but they won't have it. The salesman got quite shirty when I asked which I wasn't too happy about, so much so, that when his next customer came in wanting to buy a £1400 TV on the spot (which turned his frown upside down, lol), I merely walked up to the customer and advised them they could save up to £400 on line. He said thanks to the salesman and walked out the shop rofl

BTW, make sure your room is big enough for a 40", my F.I.L got a 40" and the quality of picture is quite bad due to not being able to get enough distance away from it when watching normal TV.

Rich

How long have you had them?

My bro hasn't complained to me yet so either he doesn't have them or he hasn't noticed

Two places to go for advice:

www.hdtvorg.co.uk/

and www.avforums.com

I've ended up with the samsung that's in postion 6 on their top ten. It's lovely.

I selected it after I saw a friend's samsung (the R73 series) and after reading the avforums.com about it and others. best thing is choose a price, choose 2 or 3 screens you can't decide between, then go down to curry's and ask for a demo of each one. Choose the one you like best and then go and buy it on the internet. Job's a good'un.

Malman, do you know on which input these 'purple snakes' manifest themselves?

I'm guessing its a CVBS thing potentially.

Alternatively do you have a link to the discussion on avforums?

Its hard to get a clear picture (pardon the pun) but it looks like all inputs from in built freeview through to DVD over hdmi. Seems dark scenes highlight the problem so certain films show up more than others.

Hoping it will just be a firmware issue
