Front Splitter
Discussion
I keep seeing postings re front splitter. I can't tell if mine is there or not, can you tell from picture on my profile? I've heard that if its missing the bonnet lifts at speed? I have noticed a bit of lifting over 80mph is this normal or is the splitter gone?
Any tips advice gratefully received.

Ah beaten to it in the time it took me to upload the picture! Guess you now have a pretty good idea what a splitter sort of looks like...
Splitters are fitted to dirupt the air flow that flow under the car. Im told by TVR that this in turn causes a back pressure which in turn pushes more air back up and towards the radiator, as we all know TVR's big lump lack's a bit of cooling but you must understand this only works at high speed.

After about a year a scraping my splitter on speed bumps, lumpy roads etc it finally came loose, making a hideous noise in the process as it was still fixed at one end.
My observations from losing it and not replacing it are,
1. The engine warms up quicker.
2. The engine gets hotter when moving.
3. Fit a mod wise kit and set half speed reasonably low and the engine stays cooler.
4. Far more fun to drive without graunching the car on the floor.
5. No loss of stability at high speed *
6. Bonnet has never moved or flexed at high speed *
7. * = exactly that

thanks but what does it actually look like?
I'm in the process of writing an article on the splitters for ChimaeraPages but here's a preview of what can happen on rough (in this case Italian) roads...
And the results of my attempts to repair it at the road-side:
Axe - perhaps you should mention in your article that the main purpose of the air dam (or "flip"
is to create a low pressure region behind it therefore drawing air through the radiator at speed and out under the car. This forced airflow path also helps prevent the undirected flow upwards and trying to get out around the bonnet profile. That's why it's also important to make sure the rad is sealed all around so no air can escape. Correct definition for a "splitter" is to direct airflow above and below it in a controlled airstream (as on race cars). This is not stricktly a splitter.
