T'other morning, about 08.10 I was walking back to the house, met a neighbour walking his dog. His first comment??

good morning? - no?
nice day? - no?

TVR broken down? - YES

all I was doing was fecking walking - I had actually taken my LAguna in to get failed ESP/ABS hydraulics fixed, but this guy obviously had not even seen me leave.

I corrected him, updated him and re-established his understanding of TVRs - got me annoyed though!

What no kick in the balls??

Only joking

It seems like the BBC viewing pubic (deliberate mistake!) tend to think because they've heard various other journos slag TVR off that they have the right to offend every TVR owner

What car does he have???? (please lord, let it be a FIAT!!) laugh

start ripping the piss about his build quality and lack of testosterone involved in purchasing said car hehe

As sad as it is, although Im not a TVR owner, most people see the TVR sticker in the windscreen and give me the same bullshit only for me to try and defend TVR...unfortunately its something that never seems to end!

Take him out for an "Enthusiastic" or "Spirited" drive accross some country lanes and shut him up

Why would it annoy you? I get this stuff all the time in London and qute frankly, I enjoy the choice that I have made, I am correct in the choice that I have made for the reasons why I have made that choice. To be upset by what someone says is beneath me as a walking talking human being.

TVR owners just seem so wierdly defensive and I don't understand why. We know our cars have faults but we still buy them because that is our personal choice. We have not sucumbed to any peer group pressure and that means that we are above being upset by third party comments.

Just let it go.

Hadn't seen my neighbour for a few weeks until today.

I've got a new addition in the drive and his first comment was "Don't they break down alot"

F**k off, I'll see you in another few weeks.

My usual response to that is "no, does yours?" which is almost always followed by "Em no, I've never owned one"..... "Oh, right..."

Doesnt really bother me as long as its not said in a malicious way. Nothing wrong with a bit of banter. That said i have only had my tvr 2 month so maybe it just gets tiresome after a while.

Still i bet the main reason is jealousy.

I look them up and down imperiously and say "Clearly you've never owned one." Then look 'em in the eye until they scurry off. As Frank Carson said: It's the way you tell 'em.

I just find them rather boring but - it has to be said - most people make a point of coming over to ooh and aah. Every TVR I've owned has been able to do that. The "don't they break down" clots are rare.

Ask an AA man what he most frequently carts about and he'll say Freelander. I don't think we have much to worry about TBH.

Seen a few of your posts and have to say you must be one of the most realistic TVR owners ive come across!
Once again you got it spot on, why get so pent up over this kind of stuff, the guy was probably only trying to make conversation and knew you loved TVR so just did a bit of ribbing, im sure no malice was meant in his comments.

I recently got the James May Car Quiz DVD. YOu start off with a nice car and then get downgraded if you get questions wrong. I opted for Sports Sports cars to start off with and was given an E-Type. After getting a few questions wrong I was downgraded to a Chimaera upon which event Mr May spouts "and of course now you will need another car - for driving".

This reputation is as burned into the British psyche as "Alfa Romeos and Lancias rust" as it has been perpetuated by motoring's most esteemed journalists and it will take a generation to remove it. Having said this I have to say that I have never read a road test of a TVR in a major car publication in which the car being used did not suffer some pretty serious unreliability issue while actually on the test - so you can't blame them in some respects if TVR couldn't even provide a press car that would hold together.

I have had 4 TVRs, my Chimaera NEVER broke down and I did 36,000 miles in two Years, my Griff 500 NEVER got me to my intended destination - not once (it even dumped me on the hard shoulder of the M25 on the way back home from the TVR Centre after a new engine had been fitted) and I had a Cerbera 4.2 which never let me down in 9,000 miles. I now have a Sag but I haven't had it long enough to experience its reliability levels, it is however in another league in terms of build quality to any of the others I've had.

Thank you.

I feel proud to have a car that inspires people to pass comment whether it is good or bad it comes in equal mix from a wide range of people.

All I know is that I thoroughly enjoy every moment of driving and owning the car and I bought it for me and me only, it is a selfish pleasure. What other people think just isn't important.

We live in a free world and I will drive what I want to drive and other people can say what they want to say. They are not going to stop me and I wouldn't dream of trying to stop them.

I remember seeing a large sign for sale in a car shop that was for the back of a car being towed, simply saying: On Tow. I allways thought it would be funny to have a sticker made up with the same look and feel that said: Not On Tow (Today). But maybe that's just my sense of humour.
