I understand some enthusiasts are adapting the air boxes of thier Porsche 911's by using a tank cutter to drill holes therby increasing the airflow. It maybe they just imagine an improved BHP due to the induction roar but most claim an improvement.Would this together with a K&N flat filter work on an XKR?

The answer is that it may well do, but that it will probably also make the induction noise significantly louder at certain points in the rev range. There is probably very little to be gained in doing this.

Older xkrs already have a secondary flap that opens at higher throttle angles and the "new" xkr runs 2 air boxes so as Gavin has said any gains would be doubtful.

And i would think reduced filtration of air going round the tips of the blower is the last thing you want.

Am i right in thinking that the chargecooler water on those things is plumbed into the main coolant rather than a pre-rad at the front? - if so, splitting that of into its own system would give greater gains i would think.

This sounds like somthing a few of my mates used to do when we were 17.

1.0 Fiesta, drill some holes in the airbox, feel the extra power. mmmmmmmm.

If you can increase airflow to the engine, you can get a bit of extra oomph, but to be honest, I wouldn't have thought that the increase wouldn't be all that noticeable. Plus, you would be bypassing the filter element and letting lots of nasties into the supercharger and engine.

Best thing to do would be install a freer flowing air filter.

Use a Manometer to measure the pressure drop across the standard intake and the "drilled" one, and then with a performance filter added.

Chances are the stock setup isn't really adding any siginificant flow resistance vs any other option available... I've even seen flow diagrams for tested filters showing "perfomance" filters flowing a little bit better overall, but their response to instantaneous flow change is worse, so less response in theory.

What kind of air flow meter is there on the XKR? Some have a protective but turbulence generating mesh which can liberate more power if removed than anything else on the intake side. Some have a different design, and I've seen lots of newer Ford Co cars have the much more efficient air flow/mass designs that have no interference.

Lastly, ram air is probably the best way to optimise the intake. If there is any resistance in the system, then adding a positive pressure into the intake/filter housing will offset any pressure drop they generate. Just making an effecive ram air intake that won't look stupid on an XKR
