aftermarket exhausts vs porsche warranty
Discussion
quick question guys.
one thing i want / would like to change on my 996tt is the exhaust note. would gladly have bought a porsche one if they had done one so i'm left with either leave as standard or buy an aftermarket one and potentially risk porsche telling me my exhaust has cancelled out my warranty "if" anything goes wrong then can be linked to the exhaust system.
so my question is what do other 996 / 997 turbo owners feel? one of the main reasons i bought from an OPC is for the warranty. really interested in hearing other people's opinions and views. i know i'm worrying over potentially nothing but i would hate to buy an exhaust, love the sound then something goes wrong and prosche won't fix it.
thanks
Rick

thanks i understand basically what bits would / would not be covered in terms of dealership commonsense. i can't see any dealer say my air-con has gone by putting on an exhaust.
really wondering what people do. do they cross fingers and do it or live with the standard exhaust - obviously this really only applies to cars bought from an OPC.
anyone know why porsche never developed a sports exhaust for the 996tt?

Personally i dont see a problem other then if you get a problem with the exhaust then Porsche wont help, but the only really option is to ring there Customer Services and ask really.
Unless someone can say with concrete evidence, i ring and find out!

They may well argue that that the car [paraphrased from the warranty document] "has been modified in a manner not approved by the manufacturer"
They may argue that the 'zorst affects breathing and how the engine runs etc.
Basically, if they elect to fold their arms and say tough, you won't be in a position to force them to pay up. So effectively you are risking it. Whether you are morally in the right or not is pretty irrelevant. IF (and I do mean IF) they decide to be awkward you'll be left with a busted engine and no warranty.
I have an idea though - I have a Carrera 2 - I'll swap you for your 996TT and you can then buy a PSE. Job done

Exactly the situation as I see it - not sure what could really go wrong with the engine that could be blamed on an exhaust engineered to make a fruitier sound, would reduced back pressure screw up ECU settings or something or would it adapt anyway?
I have asked why Porsche don't make one for the TT, response was "Porsche don't believe it needs one". To which I responded "Given Porsche don't make any power increase claims and state PSE is just for improved noise, the TT is the model that needs one the most!"
"Hmmm you have a point" [shrugs]

I would have thought that the 'burden of proof' would have been on them to show that the exhaust was the cause of the failure...

Not too sure about that, old boy.
Imagine your engine grenades. You go to them. They knock back your claim ("non standard exhaust caused the damage mate" )
Where are you then? You have a busted engine. They have refused to pay out. In order to force them YOU have to take THEM to court, and prove your case - i.e. that in contract you are entitled to the cover. This would be a lengthy and expensive business, and if you LOST you'd have to pay their costs and yours (inclduing their very expensive lawyers at £400 an hour.)
Which is why I make the point about whether you are MORALLY entitled to cover or not is irrelevant. You (the little guy with no big legal team and not making billions a year in profit) have to take THEM on and risk being hammered if you lose.

which is why im not afraid to do anything.
i just show em a picture of 'my lawyer' and they back the
down, as i believe is the correct legal parlance. on my old tvr - the ecu recorded all the max reading etc.
i assume that porsche being who they are have the same kind of features? the reason i ask is that if i put an aftermarket exhaust and say it improved the breathing for example - i assume this would be recorded in the ecu. so if anything went wrong and i removed the exhaust and put it back to standard, porsche would still know that something had been different???
i know it's a very grey area that in practice would end up depending on how you dealt with the issue and what the opc was like. seems stupid to me that porsche don't make one for the tt.
