I realise this has been asked nearly as much as 'What baby seat for my 911', but the only answer I can remember is 'Mobil 1', and the search engine seems to have gotten lucky with Heather Graham at the moment...

So, I noticed this morning the oil level was down below half (according to the dipstick).

So what viscosity oil should i get? Semi-Synth, or fully synth.

And whats the oil capacity of the engine in litres?

Tis a 98 996 C2 btw.

Found this for you. A quart is 95% of a litre, btw. It's from a very anal US site - so can probably be relied on as those guys have the biggest anoraks on the planet. The procedure assumes you're filling the oil from zero after a change, so it would seem to put the capacity at about 8 litres. If you need a very specific answer, I'm at Porsche later and can ask for you. On the subject of oil, pretty much everyone swears by Mobil 1 - so you'll be using that in any event as it's what's probably (definitely) what's already in your car. As for the viscosities - these guys suggest mixing. Don't know how I feel about that, but the rest of the site I got this from seems extremely thorough.

Several people have suggested mixing two different viscosities of Mobil 1. I believe Van Larson might have been the first to post on this and he was also the first to explain a 996 oil change in any detail. (Thanks, Van.) Pour in 4 qts of 5-30, followed by 4 qts 15-50. If you need to top off, add very slowly, more 15-50 but don't over-fill or you might have to drain the whole lot! Lower the car to normal, start her up, and immediately check the oil pressure, which should be right up at max. Also check for any warning lights. If there's a problem, something's leaking, you haven't put the lid on something properly, or you've somehow dramatically underfilled the car. Checking oil level means getting the car up to normal operating temperture. Take it out for a spin, periodically checking pressure, and when warmed up, stop, turn off the engine and check the dip-stick. It is not advisable to exceed the max mark on the stick and some have reported (Bill, actually) that excess oil can be a cause of oil leaks from the main bearing seal.

Serious hat back on again , the owners manual says that from min to max on the oil gauge is 1.5 litres , and max consumption of oil is 1.5 litres per 1000kms (620 miles)..
Also it quotes oil change quantity as 7.75 litres or 8.25 litres , excluding/including the oil filter.

Hope that helps.

To be honest I wouldn't mix oils.

Why not just have a new bellyfull of Mobil 1 for £100 and be sure...

OPC use Mobil 1 0W-40

I think you'd be fairly safe putting in about half to three quarters of a litre Mobil 0-w40 to top up, 's wot I'd do.

If you want to top it up to spot on, as long as you know how to measure it and have a suitable funnel all things are possible (apart from dates with Heather Graham, get thee behind me!).
