Hi

Have a 1.6 SX - P reg. For the last 3 weeks or so I have been losing electrical power at low speed/when braking - the headlights dim (if on) and then the battery light comes on and engine cuts out. Battery is just over yr old (replaced in september 05), a new coil, rotor arm, distributor cap and leads were all fitted at the same time.

Am I right in thinking this would indicate the alternator is not charging the battery?

Any help appreciated.

yes you're right this does sound like a duff alternator - check the voltage across the battery with the engine running you should see 13.6 - 14.1 volts

Thanks Motorwise - checked that, came back with lowest reading of 13.9 and highest of 14.1 - did it half a dozen times to be sure.

Then decided to look at all the electrics and found that one of the air sensors was damaged and one of the- replaced and hey presto back to normal!
