Dan Walsh - Bike Magazine
Discussion
Anyone else think this guy is the best bike journalist/travel writer around at the moment?
The mag wasn't the same when he disappeared last year - soudns like he climbed into a bottle and was struggling a bit - makes for fabulous reading though. I think they ought to assemble all his writing in one volume, 'cos I'd buy it.
He is one of the besy writers but he also has the best subject matter!
Bike mags are boring because in the end all the articles are pretty much the same. His writing is good because he does not really mention bikes, its all about the experience.
As someone who has ridden round the world I can say what he is very good at is conveying the lunacy of doing it. There were loads of times when I was away when I wondered just what the hell I was doing - crossing the Southern desert in Iran in 40 degrees of heat, riding up the himalaya's and bein stopped from getting to China from Pakistan, following a load of gunmen in a pick up so as I could see the Khyber Pass and Afganistan beyond... After you have done it, it makes excellent conversation but at the time its mental... Its that kind of image I get from his writing. He also conveys the loneliness pretty well as well as how you go party mad when you meet other travellers.
