Discussion
I am currently in negotiations with the dealer from whom I purchased my car (none OPC but a porsche specialist of of good repute) as to a number of points so I dont want to go into too much detail yet, as I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and allowing them to attmept to sort some of the issues.
One issue that is becoming a saga is the stereo (advertised with a cd changer subsequently not located in it at point of sale and only a tape head unit included). It has been since agreed that I would accpet a single cd porsche (becker) headunit instead, now I am being told this....
"I'm struggling with the cd unit because it's an older unit they do not make new ones anymore they just recondition them but in order to buy one you have to p/x the old unit, in this case we have a different unit. Could you please have a look on the market to find an appropriate replacement budget being the same as the Porsche unit which is £200."
...I dont want to change the original interior so is the above correct?
Cheers

Surely you could have seen it had a tape player and no cd changer when you bought it?
Keep a look out on ebay as there will probably be a couple knocking about
At the moment there are about 3 CD changers going for £20 and a couple of Porsche o.e. 1998-2004 CD players for similar dosh

What year is your proposed car? If it's a pre-MOST equipped car then any unit will work. After MY2003 with the introduction of MOST you are pretty much limited (unless you rip out all the MOST components) to a CDR-23. I've seen a few CDR-23s go through on eBay and there was one for sale in the back of 911&Porsche World. This unit will need encoding for your car so you'll have to pay your OPC to do this.

Funny, I was quoted a £300 replacement cost for my CDR21. Bought a secondhand one for considerably less off another PH'er.
Most of the Becker units look pretty low key and are therefore a good fit with the Porsche interior, good opportunity to get yourself something more up to date.
On a related matter, I had the sat-nav doobrie (PCM?) removed from my 996 before I bought it because it wasnt' working. Why? 'Cos it looked great in the dash which heightens the disappointment when you reveal its broken.
The dealer I bought from replaced it with a standard Porsche head-unit, but as a consequence I get only 4 speakers working and not 6. I spoke to a helpful chap at ICE people Bannings today, who said that when they were doing the work for the dealer they couldnt get the door speakers to work because of the wiring on the amp.
They said that Porsche have a variety of amps - the cabs' have one; the cars with sat-nav have one; cars with a regular head unit have one - and that they are not interoperable from a wiring perspective.
Does anyone know whether this is true (the guy sounded like he knew what he was talking about) and if so, how this can be overcome? Alternatively should I buy another amp?

Just seen the thread. It`s sort of been mentioned already but then ignored. Why can you not keep the original head unit and fit a changer in the front bonnet as per a factory install. I`ll wager the wiring will already be there. So with either an original changer or the right Becker branded unit fitment will be easy enough.

This doesn't sound quite right to me.
Basically your speaker wiring will either terminate behind the head unit or in the front boot where the amp sits. It depends on the original audio specification chosen, not if it's a cab or not (although there are wiring differences on a cab).
As you originally had the PCM your wiring would have terminated in the front boot and the door speakers would be fed from the original Porsche amp.
The wiring diagram is here and it's a 6MB .PDF file.
It's more dependent on if you're still running the Porsche amp or one integrated into the head unit IMO.

Good question! I think the dealer thinks its cheaper and easier to get hold of a new head unit than a changer - I dont know if there's compatiility issues with the changers currently on the market and the headunit in my car
WILL SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO A DUMB NEWBIE HOW I GET THE POST I'M REPLYING TO TO COME UP IN THE WHITE BOX? THANKS

Thanks Henry - I have a changer, and the head unit is satisfactory. Its the fact that I get 4 instead of 6 speakers thats not. I think BlairOut has hit the nail on the head. Thanks all.
