By that, I mean is it fair that Richard Branson or Paul M'cCartney get fined the same amount as an eighteen year old university student for doing 50 in a 30....scratchchin

Obviously three points on their licence would hurt just as much, (Well perhaps not as Richard Branson would be able to afford a driver if he got banned under the totting up procedure)

Absolutely not.

Same offence. Same punishment.

Indeed. The fine is a slap on the wrist - the real punishment/problem is the points

They are.

A fixed penalty is just that, a fixed penalty for a pre-determined offence.

If you do something worse, such as dangerous driving, then you go to court, and if found guilty you are fined depending on your circumstances.

If they're snapped by a camera they'll be charged nothing, because they'll never be tracked down.

What he said.

A billionaire speeding is no more dangerous than a chav speeding.
And more likely to be insured...

yes they should be means tested. If it doesn't hurt, what's the point?

Drop the fine altogether. Make it just about the points, total equality of punishment.

Are we talking about mere speeding offences? Well let's keep it simple; no fines and no points - and nowt else either!

OK guys?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Agreed. Fines are a piss-poor way of punishing people - we all view, value, and earn money differently, yet the crime is the same. Fines are simply the result of too many lawyers making the law (and wanting pay-by-the-minute).

Just to play the devil's advocat, should the limit of 12 points be higher for rich people? Or maybe they should be able to buy more?

Yeah but as a skint young person with a beloved in another town if I lost my license I'd be metaphorically shafted, if Branson lost his nothing would change, it wouldn't affect him, he'd just get some flunky to drive.
