Hi,

I'm after a bit of advice. I've just been given a lift home by a mate in an R reg Defender, and it was making a strange graunching noise on overrun (sounded like a brake binding) and a whistling/whining noise under acceleration- again intermittent that souded like the brakes again. All sounded like they were coming from the front. He wasn't touching the brakes, it went once upto speed and returned when slowed again (making me think it might not be just a binding brake). It only started on this journey, as I got a lift with him this morning and it wasn't doing it! I said I thought it might be either driveshaft of diff related but I know very little about Landies.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated I'm sure!

Thanks in advance.

Front diff or transfer box transferring noise to the front via prop shaft. Has the motor been off roading recently it could easily be that the vehicle hasn't been cleaned properly after said event, with ingress of mud noises can just appear.
