Hi all.

Friends have recomended this as a 'better' alternative to limewire. However, I dont seem to be able to get it working. I have installed it and everything and know how to get it to start on a torrent. But I think the problem is to do with the connection.... (it just sits there trying to connect)

At the moment I am on a network (a very large student accomodation building, where the internet is supplied by a university) So is it just not likely to work due to this set up?

OR

Do I need to tweak the connection settings. Its got an option for 'proxies' (no idea what this means) they are something like http1, socks 4, socks 4a and socks 5 ??? confused

Just wandering if anyone can help? I'm not massivley botherd that its not working, because I'm pretty certain it will work once I get back home to the 8meg broadband, unlike the crap speeds we get here!

Thanks in advance

it could be that the torrent site denies bitcomet.. it's commen that alot of torrent sites block it

Best one i've used and using now is utorrent

It could also be the ports as your either blocked from connecting at uni firewall or the torrent tracker is not allowing you to download as no port open for you to upload on.

Have been using isohunt to get the torrent file, thats what was recomended, so havent really looked for any other sites. I might have to use a different piece of torrent software then....
Anyone know if this isohunt blocks the bit comet software?

isohunt doesnt block bitcomet (using it right now) though I'm not sure what you mean by block.

All that should be required is bitcomet installed, click on the torrent link in isohunt and away you go.

Assuming ports are open on the firewall etc.

Almost certainly the uni is shaping network traffic and not allowing bitcomet to work. I was in halls last year and after MUCH effort managed to get bitcomet to work, at a reduced speed. Unless your friendly with the uni IT department then probably not worth it. However other torrent clients like uTorrent can encrypt the network traffic and fool firewalls etc. Give uTorrent a go anyway though, much better client than bitcomet.

Right, well thats good to hear! I was asking about isohunt been blocked as scissorhands83 suggested that the site may be blocking bitcomet.

The thing is I'm not that great when it comes to understanding all the tech stuff. How would I check the ports and the firewall?

Im beginning to think the web provider has blocked P2P software as LimeWire can also be hit and miss when trying to download files outside of the LAN. However ethernet connections using LimeWire run at over 1000kb/s. Which is very nice and all well and gud but kinda exaughsted the material on the netowork now!

Hopefully someone might be help further, but thanks to the two so far!!

Mallone, thanks for the reply, must have come in while I was replying to the other post!

I have installed utorrent aswell, same thing still happening, not managing to establish a connection.
So must be the uni blocking it!

Is it easy to get this utorrent to work? Any sugestions to try?

Many thanks!

Have a browse of the terms and conditions for the Uni network. Quite a lot of them block the torrent ports, often after a cease and desist letter from the lawyers. Cant blame them. Use sneakernet instead, its much better

jolly, cant quite remember the settings for utorrent, but i know that the basic premise of what i did was to route torrent traffic through the normal web ports. think it was called HttpPort or something similar, wasnt great tbh. I worked out how to do it by searching for "uni halls and torrents" or something equally obvious in google. Give it a bash, sorry i cant remember any more ideas!
