Myself and my better half have decided (after the very generous loan of one by a good mate) to buy a 30D. We're after the package with the 18-55mm kit lens and I've been looking at prices. From what I've seen on www.camerapricebuster.co.uk the best price seems to fluctuate almost daily. I'm aware of the £100 Canon cashback if we buy before 31/01 and my OH feels happier about buying over the counter rather than mail order, and has ruled out buying from Hong Kong via Ebay.

It seems the best price as I type is £779, which has increased by £50 since the weekend. Is anyone aware of cheaper firms that don't feature on www.camerapricebuster.co.uk, and is it worth holding out to see if the price drops again?

some jessops branches will price match with what you can find on the net. you can only give it a go. the one where i bought my 30d matched the price that i found at the time.

Jessops are expensive to begin with - their "sticker price" so to speak, but I have found on the purchase of a few ~£500 items that they will price match a surpsigin amount. I find that I have to pay slihgtly more (£20...£30) as they don't price match everybody, but I believe that extra to be well worth it as I find my local Jessops shop (Bluewater) very good indeed, and it brings confidence buying from a person rather than a computer.

Jessops have been in the financial press in the last few days reporting that they suffered from a lack of availability of DSLRs in the Xmas buying period - thus results not good.

If you are looking at a retail outlet with on line presence you could try AJ Purdy. Current price for the kit seems to be a tad over 800 but there may be some additional bits that could be negotiated. They have a sale on as well but probably not for the specific combination you want.

Other than that presumably if supplies pick up prices may drop a little but then the 100 cash back is a reasonable incentive in that direction anyway.

The next round of new product announcements are due in a couple of months or so but they are usually in advance of availability anyway.

By way of comparison the 'refurbished' 30D bodies from the Canon Outlet on eBay have been going for a few quid short of the regular competitive retailers prices (Purdy, Warehouse Express) even though they are unlikely to have the £100 cash back offer associated with them.

So overall I suspect that you have probably identifed as good a price as you are likely to find ar the moment. It would probably be rash to speculate about the future prices though.

As for waiting - the nature of the digital camera industry is that there is always something around the corner but that does not always seem to lead to very significant price adjustments in the short term. Whatever you buy the chances are that it will be quite a bit cheaper a year down the line (especially the smaller units in the volume market where that can happen in weeks rather than years). Offset that against you need or desire to take the better images you presumably expect from the investment. What are they worth?

Cheers for all your replies. There is a local camera specialist near us (Park Cameras) that we'll have a look at and see if they price match, failing that It'll most likely be a purchase from Jessops.

I bought my 70-200 2.8 Lis from Park mail order, they were excellent to deal with and the best price bar none at the time.

Having said that I just bought my 5D, 24-105 lens kit from Jessops in store, they price matched their web price and also matched the offer of free Sandisk 2GB extremeIII card and Lowepro bag thrown in. With 12 month interest free option it was a no brainer for me.

Not only are Jessops dearer for cameras, batteries as well. 2 x button batteries £6.99

Try www.7dayshop.com same item for 99p? They do lots of other goodies as well, replacement digi cam batteries, etc etc. Well worth a visit.

Just be sure you want the 30D... I'm assuming (along with most others) that it'll be replaced shortly (probably by a 10mp sensor cleaning 40d).

Also you have money for more glass? if not I'd personaly go for a cheaper body & replace that kit lens. At least get the 'nifty fifty' too.

I was in my local dealer this afternoon and he was absolutely livid with Canon, who have just raised their prices without telling anyone - the first he knew was when a delivery arrived today and he was checking the paperwork and it didn't square with what he was expecting. The 400D has gone up by £50, 580EX flashguns are now £330, but some things hadn't changed. If you are quick some dealers might still have stock at the older price.

We really didn't like the look and feel of the 400D when we had a look at one. Lenes will be a longer term investment I think. I really like the look of the Tamron 17-35 mm we've been lent.

We're off to Las Vegas in 8 weeks - are lenses significantly cheaper over there?

Rob, not trying to be picky, but did you mean the 40D or 400D ? I ask because the 30D is only 9 months or so old (isn't it?) so why would they make a 40D so soon?!

because the 30D is basically a 20D with spot mettering and a bigger LCD.

nikon have the D80 and D200 and they are outselling the 30D

Hmmm, a ring round my local Jessops (3 in my town) reveals unrealistically high price tags and no price-matching. Same goes for my not so local specialist 'Canon Pro' dealer. Looks like it'll have to be an internet purchase. I looked at prices Stateside, but it seems the difference is only a few percent, and the hassle could be quite significant if things go tits up with it.

Still, on the bright side I should be able to get it for c.£640 after the Canon cashback, which is not a great deal off 400D money.

Yeah the 30d is realy a 20dmkII, the 400d is in a efw ways better than their next rung up camera.

That the 30d will be replaced soonish is easy, 10mp & sensor cleaning is the minimum I'd expect to be in the package. Prolly better AF too I guess.
