360 Achivement Points
Discussion
Now I have to confess to being a bit new to online/360 gaming, and I do catch myself "comparing games" with the people I come across online and I'm amazed by how many have 1000 points on their games.
I suppose it's a bit of an open question as to how many of us play for the points? And what does that say about the person behind the profile? I confess that I get really bored quickly and so I can't see me hunting for the last 30 point achievement, but I can see being only one achivement away, it would be tempting...

I'm very new to the 360, only acquiring it 2 days after GOW came out in November last year, so my 670 or whatever it is looks mince compared to some of those sporting 15-20k gamerscores out there...
But one thing that does kinda seem a bit iffy is the fact that take GOW - you can make 550 or so gamer points by completing the game in all difficulty settings and Dom co-op mode etc (which I have), but unless you have live access you are then unable to compete for the other 450 or so on offer, yes the online play is great fun and often better than the standard game, but it's the game that most people buy it for yet only just over half the points tie into that.
Since I got the xbox I've been watching for cheap deals on the likes of play.com etc and have now got:-
Gears Of War
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Call Of Duty 3
Project Gotham 3
Pro Evo Soccer 6
Splinter Cell Double Agent
Test Drive Unlimited
so 7 games = 7000 possible points but I've only played COD3 for a day till GOW arrived, so think I've 30 points on there, 10 from PGR3 which I played for literally an hour or so the day it landed on my doorstep, and TDU I got bored with within the first 20mins of firing it up
Now that I've completed the game site of GOW I'm going to play more ranked matches to try and unlock the 100 kill achievements etc, such as the 100 chainsaw kills one which I unlocked on Monday night, I'll never play the game long enough to go for the 10,000 kills one so I'll probably move onto another game once I get the rest of them unlocked

I don't go for the points religiously, however, I don't say no
1st thing I do when I get a game is see which points I can pick up first and easiest.
However, at the exterme end of the scale, I play with one guy who is just an achievement point fanatic, he is up to 31k at the last time I checked !!
I have 1000 points on a couple of games, but only because they gave all points for just playing through. If you want a 1000 points in a day, just rent out King Kong and play it through. I was off work ill one day, sent the misses to rent it for me and finished it by the end of the day
I would have to say though, the achievement points do keep me playing a game I would otherwise give up on. There is no way I would have put up with the pain of TDU if it weren't for a bit of point who**ing

I'm up to just over 20,000 generally if I can get the points offline i'll go for it, online ones don't bother me quite as much. It's more a measure of how many games you've played rather than how much you're willing to put into each one.
I would agree though that they're a bit more incentive to keep playing a game for longer than you would normally just to get a few extra points.

I'd never really been to bothered about points, although as others have said some games i have spent a little more time playing just to get the the achievement. However now several of my close friends have just got 360s and are trying to catch up to my points (4300 odd) so it's time to dust off my old games and get a few more points.
The reason they do that is because of the amount of collusion that can go on, back in the early days of live there were people playing PGR2 on the same track constantly, inviting their friends to allow them to start the game and then whoring the tracks for as many Kudos points as they could, they would do this all day in certain cases and the leaderboards for the games became a joke.
Having ranked matches with random people allows them to ensure none of this goes on and it's a true measure of skill, rather than a group of friends helping each other out.

so if you spent the time playing the PH games you wouldnt get any...
I tried to see if I could set up a PH Ranked match, but you can't invite anyone into the room... Seems a waste with all the PH games we have not to get some achievements, but not to be alas...
Tuan
yeah, but perhaps for the next PH match, we can all get into a room together, and when we have enough peeps, you could start a Ranked match, we would just need to hang out on the 'find custom match' page and hope we were lucky enough to get into the room together.
May be worth trying a couple of times, as you say, it'll give you some achivements and rankings, which considering we seem to sit up till gone midnight most nights would be a slight reward for lack of sleep!

Not gonna work either, think how many thousands of people there are online at one time all looking for ranked matches, you might get one or two of you in the same room at once, but never all of you, plus as soon as a ranked match is over you get kicked out and have to start another one, so even if all of you did get that long-shot of a game where you were all in together you'd be kicked out the moment that round ended.

can the room owner 'kick' people from a Ranked room like a player match?
if so that would solve some of the problem no?
I was in a ranked match the other day a 'clan' managed to get in all together against a bunch of randoms, so it must be possible?

This would be the only way to do it, but if your "rank" isn't enough, you're never going get in.

I dont think so - as i said, i ended up in a room full of a clan and people that obviously have no life and some kind of Intervenous drip to allow them to stay connected 24/7/365
Looking at this thread it seems that it is possible, but you'll need to get everyone hunting for the same map at the right time, and set the number of rounds to a high number so that other people will choose not to join it:

_Dobbo_ amd I will host a room later from 9pm then and see if it's listed.
you'll both host a room? do you not want to play with each other then? (oh sailor!)
Best bet is to decide on Map and number of rounds, post on here so we all know what to search for!
