I and my father fancy getting our hands dirty, and giving hillclimbing a go, and have totally no knowledge of said rules requirements etc etc etc.
will be done on a small budget with a non-mot'd car, rollcaged fuel and batt cut-off....
can anyone fill me in, or point me in the right direction please?

Join your local Motor Club, Bristol or nearby I guess, have a look at www.aswmc.org.uk and find the speed/hillclimb section that will have details of events on in the South West Championship.
You'll need a Non-race national B competition licence for most events (except the National A stuff fairly obviously) for about £34.
Hillclimbing can be done in a totally standard car as long as it has the beam breaker on the front (black plate), I'm sure there are a few more rules.
Find motorclub first, they'll be listed on the ASWMC website.

personally i would consider a season of sprinting first, most are big wide courses and offer a good introduction to motorsport, the hills in the south west are a wee bit scary for first timers, i'm thiking wiscombe for starters!

Yep, "nothing to hit at Colerne" is what I always used to tell people, until I hit what seemed to be the only post on the entire airfield at about 80mph!
Great fun, but really expensive! I did a sprint at Colerne a couple of years ago with Pablo as a second driver....I think it was £80 each to enter and I drove it twice for that, which took about 10mins total.
IMHO the best fun £ for £ is Auto tests. What a hoot, and dirt cheap to enter.

Don't, whatever you do, work out the cost of sprinting/hillclimbing per mile/minute. It's absolutely horrendous. Just treat it as a good day out with a bunch of petrolheads with some competitive motorsport thrown in.
Like someone said when I queried that sprinting was "cheap motorsport"; "I didn't say it was cheap motorsport, I said it was entry level motorsport".
Despite that, I wish I'd taken it up years ago.
