I'm running a Netgear WG311 PCI card with a Netgear DG834G Modem Router. I've been running these items for more than a year with no problems until one day when the PCI card could not find the Router anymore. I tried all the usual like reinstalling the driver, updating the driver, updating the firmware etc. but nothing made any difference. I ruled out a hardware issue by installing a different Netgear PCI card and I even swapped out the router with another one, but still wireless wouldn't work. Eventually I managed to get the original PCI card to communicate with the original router using the windows configuration instead of the Netgear one. Now this only randomly works with regular reinputting of the WEP network key, regular power cycles etc. The strange thing is it can normally see the router but just can't connect, other times it can't see any networks at all, then sometimes no problems... Any ideas as I'm about ready to smash everything to pieces! mad

Try changing the router to a different wireless channel - I've had symptoms like you describe before, and a quick run with NetStumbler showed that one of my neighbours had got a new router. Changed the channel and it was fine again.

I did cycle through all the channels whilst connected via the ethernet to try and connect wirelessly again, but none worked... However, I did'nt just settle for a just one different one and follow up with a reboot, so I'll give this another try...

Might just have come to the end of its life then - my first Netgear lasted just under two years, not sure what the normal life expectancy is.

I'm fairly sure it's not a hardware issue though, as I swapped the PCI card out for a brand new one I had at work and I even tried work's router instead of mine, but still the same issues...

Sorry, I read that you'd tried a different card but I skipped over the bit about changing the router. paperbag

Have you got a wireless USB stick you could try instead? It might be your PCI card port that is playing up.

I have, and I've even left it plugged in, but disabled and have regularly tried enabling it and connecting with this when the PCI card doesn't work, but I get exactly the same issues.

The only other thing I can think of is interference - the neighbours haven't just installed a baby monitor or something of that ilk have they?

I can't see any other networks when scanning, although that doesn't rule out any hidden networks, I will have to speak to my neighbours and find out if they have anything else that may interfere...

That links to version 1.2 of the software which I have tried (along with all the other versions), I'm now running version 2.0.0.7 which is the latest one.

Fair enough.... There's some good info on the Netgear site, it's just that particular link that jumped out at me.

could be anything, but most likely something has changed - you havnt had any auto windows updates for hardware etc on the mainboard etc?

check new firmware and drivers for the cards/router

general lifespan or MTBF is 5-7 years on this kit and the warranty is 2 or 3 years - if youre really having probs get tech support to RMA it and give you new kit if its within warranty

Updates were set to automatically download and install before it went wrong, since then I've turned that off, so that may have caused all this... The router has got the latest firmware installed.
