Boxster starting problems...help!
Discussion
I am having trouble starting my automatic '97 Boxster and am seeking advice. It only starts sometimes when in 'Park' and after a while (and a number of tries and moving the lever in and out of Park) it tends to start up. Initially I thought it was due to poor battery power, but I am now thinking it is due to a switch within the gear box. Has anyone got any ideas?
I had the same problem with my 2000 996.
OPC replaced (in this order) the battery, the ignition barrel, the whole gearlever unit, the immobiliser, the alarm system and finally the DME (computer.) Not sure which it was as it was under warranty, so they basically changed everything in sight to sort it (shotgun approach I guess.....) In the end it cost about £6000 including labour.....
Sounds like first port of call might an ignition barrel or a gearlever switch problem preventing the starter motor being engaged (i.e. car thinks it is in PARK so it won't start.)
Hope this helps (a bit.)
Bad luck chap. It's likely to be something and nothing, but finding it will be the problem.

Correct henry-f !!
It is in actual fact 9 out of 10 times the selector switch quadrant assembly on the side of the gearbox that is seized up so it doesent sit correctly in P or N to start the vehicle..
There are repair parts available to fix this but usually just getting it off and cleaning/lubing it up will cure this problem
hope this helps
