Hi everyone!

I'm looking forward to this years race, though sadly a friend of mine who came to the race a couple of years ago with me passed away recently. Don't get all down though, he was a great guy and would hate it.

We would like to discuss with family over what to do with the ashes. His girlfriend and I are suggesting they be scattered at Le Mans, as I think they are not sure where else they could go. I know he would love this idea.

His favourite spot was either the braking zone for Indianapolis or on the bank coming up to Arnage. Obviously I don't want them to go where thousands of people are going to be trampling up and down for 4 or 5 days every year, but also want to be relatively close to his favourite position.

I'm just after some ideas about where would be suitable. I was thinking maybe the little bit between the edge of the track and the barrier on the driver's left as you come up to Arnage or over on the outside coming to Indianapolis. Another option is on the outside of Arnage corner itself, but I remember ther's a house just off it and I don't want to offend anybody.

Any thoughts fellow petrolheads??

Cheers for any feedback!

Andy

I'm not sure I can help but I think it's a lovely idea.

What about somewhere out around the banking at Mulsanne/Arnage etc?

You have to make sure that you persuade a team to take him on the 24hr in a car before you scatter the poor soul in the wind. I'm sure Aston Martin or someone would oblige.

Top idea.

I'd recommend scattering them on the track at Indianapolis/Arnage on the Sunday evening after the race. By about 9pm, as it's about dusk, the track is open to regular traffic, but it's almost deserted. And you'll be doing it with the smell of racing cars in the air and rubber ground into the road and scuffed across the red and white curbs...

I definitely like that idea.

A friend of mine father died some years back, he never got to do a lap at Le Mans but a couple of years ago on the anniversary we placed flowers on the Mulsanne just about where the cars would be flat out! But previous to that I had spoken to a driver and he agreed to take the flowers on a lap in his group C car in practice for the support race……

Great idea, I'd fancy my ashes scattering somewhere near the start grid, It's the only way that bits of me will ever get into some of the Pit Girlies hehe

I thought the topic read "PetrolTed's scattered ashes at LeMans"..... I thought it was a bit harsh to burn him for selling to Haymarket!!

Sounds like an excellent thing to do for your friend though! thumbup

That's an excellent idea. Try and get a team to carry his ashes during qualifying/practice on a few power laps.

I would go to testing weekend and spread the ashes on the start finish line by the clock. So he is there for the event every year and he will be watching you.

Might not be your sort of thing but if your French is any good you could try speaking to the ACO about getting his ashes added to the mixer when they are laying the new track surface, making him part of the circuit.

I think this is a lovely idea. I myself have told my OH that when I go he should get driven down the Mulsanne straight and just hold the jar out of the window and let me land where the wind takes me!

Fantastic idea, which then gives a good reason other than self-indulgence to go back every year at race time....

I thought the following, which is what the Franch do and don't permit in terms of scattering ashes, might be of use/reassurance that you're not going to get into bother doing it and might be of help in working out a good spot. "

"If the ashes are to be sealed in a monument or tomb, approval by the Mairie is required. Otherwise ashes may be scattered without formal permission on privately owned land, at sea or in an outdoor environment such as mountains or forests. Note: it is forbidden for ashes to be scattered in a public pathway, road or river (which is considered to be a public "path"."

All the best with the plan,

MG Mark

A fantastic idea and one I had discussed before with friends when thinking about where me might like to spend eternity and is very Hunter S Thompson to my way of thinking

The idea of sitting down at Indianapolis or Arnage for evermore watching you lot Hoon about on the Friday before the main event for now and evermore is as fitting a place as any.

What’s more you would also be safe in the knowledge you wouldn’t be moved on by some humourless French plod by mid afternoon Friday and would of course be assured of the best seat in the house.

Perhaps somewhere in the roots of all those coniferous trees behind the Armco may be an idea and gives it all a sense of permanency?

The other idea we had discussed was whilst blasting around the track would be to open the urn somewhere on Mulsanne and just let it all blow away

He would be ecstatic at having some hotlaps in a car - any car! - and even going in for the race!! How would I even go about enquiring about this? Just email anybody at Aston or any other racing team whose address I can get hold of?? confused I'd REALLY like to investigate this further!

Unfortunately can't make it to the testing weekend, just stretching finances as it is to make the 24hrs!!

My French is awful. Would embarass them and myself. Plus... what if they rip that section of the track up a few years after??

I know he would agree on this, the permenancy thing is something I'm after, I would like to know he would be approximately where I left him come the following years!! Lol Even before the race, he loved this part of the track, and once, we came up behind some Gendarmerie rather quickly!! How we laughed on getting back to the campsite! These memories are what makes this place seem more appropriate than others.

Can't thank everybody enough for your replies!

Cheers again!!

Live right near Aston HQ and could always drop a letter in for you or try and speak to someone if that would help?

Thanks mate, I've dropped 'em an email, but if there's anyone who can pull some strings, I'd appreciate it very much!! It's still not a certainty it could happen, his parents have got to agree, but I think something like this may help sell the idea to them both.

Certainly if I had a headed letter/email or something it'd be a hell of a lot better than having no evidence to say this was possible. I'm not sure but I would think they would take a sceptical view of such a thing being possible - f***, I didn't until someone suggested it!!

Thanks again,
Andy
