If you don't know whether you need Vista, you don't need it.

Gamers will need it, at least until MS breaks and backports DirectX 10 to Windows XP.

I've got RC2 running in a Parallels VM and I can't think of a single concrete advantage over Windows XP that would justify the expense and hassle of the upgrade for a home user.

It's got see-through windows. And the Explorer has changed.

Big woo.

Also it comes pre loaded with all that oh-so secure DRM protection which absolutely postively doesn't affect system performance... To be honest i'm seriously contemplating changing all my computers to linux if things carry on this way

i don't think microsoft care a fiddle about home user pirate copies (mines genuine btw) so fake copies will do the rounds and will be cheap/free for poeple to try out and decide but the new look GUI might attract a few on its own...

I wouldn't worry about it. I remember when XP came out Micro$oft said it couldn't be pirated. My mate handed me my very own bootleg copy 2 days later.

Not that I use it anymore, what with being a Mac nerd...

Some new features are cool, not sure if its enough to encourage people to switch though..

the new network detection stuff is usefull, the suspend-to-disk/hybernation mode is very nice too..

XP works just fine on dualcore/multiprocessor systems, and uses them.

Aero, the new interface, is being backported to XP. I belive it's due for inclusion in XP-SP3 (or possibly SP4). As for DX10 appering... I wouldn't hold your breath, MS know they have gamers by the goolies over that (or will do in a few years).

It works fine, there's no need to be scared of it, but I'd echo the comments above that it's difficult to see why a normal home / small business user would need to upgrade anytime soon. If you're buying a new machine, you may as well get one with a Vista voucher, but if you're working fine with XP I wouldn't rush out to upgrade.

Stay with XP, the only edition of XP worth having is Ultimate, and the release 1.0 is still very unstable, driver support is rubbish. Give it another 24 months for them to sort it out, and phase it with your next hardware purchase.

I wonder if it's lack of drivers that is causing your instability? It has drivers for all the hardware in the machines that I'm running it on, and (touch wood) I've not had a single problem.

There's also the question of whether you should expect Microsoft to provide drivers, or whether the hardware vendors should be supplying them.

I'd echo that.

Theres no need really, as said, if a new machine comes with Vista, then have it.

I wouldn't rush out and buy it however, and certainly in a corporate environment, its not worth our while to upgrade. We've just got the hang of XP and its nuances, and dont want the hassle of figuring out how to roll out, support etc.

At home, Ultimate is pretty cool, but hardly worth upgrading for, seeing as you can do 99.9% of the things Vista does in XP.

However, I like it, and I've been using it for a few months and had nothing but thumbs up. Just don't think its worth upgrading for no reason though.

The only reason i'm considering upgrading is to get the MCE functionality for video streaming to my Xbox, as I don't have XP MCE at the moment.

Well... that's not the only reason to be honest, the other is "Oooh, new toy!"

you dont need that anymore
upgrade media player and it will now stream to xbox without mce
