Hello all,

I thought I'd post briefly here as I’ve recently seen a number of classic Jaguar cars with Nissan diesel engine (2.8l) conversions turning up on a well known internet auction site, and I’m curious.

Is this sacrilege of the highest order or is it merely an alteration to enable the Jaguar lover to use his car daily due to reduced fuel bills? If this helps keep more classic Jaguars in good running order then surely this is a good thing.

I’ve not been able to track down much information about this conversion so I thought I would ask here, as it seems like an interesting project to discuss.
As much as I love Jaguars, I’m scared off by the thought of giant fuel costs!

Heres a recent example from an auction site

1985 JAGUAR SOVEREIGN 2.8 DIESEL AUTO GREY

Thanks for any enlightenment!

Sacrilege of the highest order! There are two things that make Jags very special. They are the ride quality and the silky-smooth engine. No Diesel can match that smoothness, besides, who would want a leather-clad tractor?

All IMHO ofcourse.

Horrendous especially with a japanese engine, YUK!
I suspect that the real consumptions arent hugely different as a late S3 XJ
can get high 20's & I suspect that the low tech 2.8 oil burner dragging that
amount of weight wouldn't be much better. Add in cnversion costs & the higher
price of diesel & I suspect the pay back is many years.

Also the engine tends to be the strongest bit. It's the body that tends to fail.

Judging by the “forecourt” where the car has been photographed, it looks as if someone is doing the conversions in his back garden in his spare time.

And unless you’re fuelling it with old chip fat oil, I can’t say that it would be a viable proposition.

This exercise shouts red diesel to me, in capital letters.

I personally think its sacriledge.
A Jaguar is not only the sensuous form of the bodywork but also the peoples, minds and passion that was involved with the engine and drivetrain.

However, Chevy V8s in Jaguars are common in the USA, so if you don't think there's anything wrong with that, then this modification is of a similar type

No don't get me wrong, I don't advocate ripping the heart out of such a fine motorcar, I simply viewed it as a curiosity. Appologies if my comments were misplaced or offensive to Jaguar owners, as I can only aspire to own such a vehicle.

No not offensive at all. I don't own a Jaguar nor have I ever, but I worked for them for many years helping out in R and D for their engines- so I'm "close" to their products

High 20's (MPG) from a Series 3. When did that happen?

I used t service a variety of XJ6's most could see 25-28 on a long run at gentle m/way speeds, the only one who could not was young & wellied it everywhere. Good earner for fixing it though.
Funnily enough the 3.4 I worked on wasn't as good on economy! Although a mate had a manual 5 speeder which wasn't bad.

Presumably these are pre-cat figures?

I had a 3.4 manual which usually did about 18, 'tho might get up to 22/23 on a long run. The 4.2 had fuel injection and slightly higher gearing (?) too which would have helped improve MPG. Mate's 4.2 was quicker as well.
Nice cars though dispite the drink problem.
