Went to the local office this morning to tax my wifes car. The tax had run out in Aug 06 (yes, a big Oooops). They said they could only tax it from Jan 07, and then gave me the option, yes, option, to pay the arrears.

As there was a 'Police Aware' note on the car, I thought it best to pay the back tax.

Has anyone taken the option not to pay the arrears? Was there any comeback?

Wasn't it SORN'd ? If it was then there's no need to pay the back tax.

No, it was just a plain lapse.

Then tax if from Jan 07. They can't tax it retrospectively during the month if the previous disc has expired.

Careful

Where there is a lapse between dates then does not the application form ask has the vehicle been used on a road during that period?

I have dealt with dozens that have said No and with evidence to disprove this sheeted them for the serious offence of making a false declaration to obtain an Excise Licence (VERA)which can attract a period in pokey/ heavy fine.

DVLA have records you know?????????

It was a 'Police Aware' sticker on the car that alerted me to the fact that wifey had neglected to renew her tax.

That's why I did pay the arrears.

I'm glad it's all sorted now, cause she is away for 3 months, with no logbook to be found, which presented it's own set of problems!
