my brother is supposed to be buying a 03 freelander massiamara (or something like that). 1.8 with 40,000 on clock its up for £6,995 and he's supposed to be picking it up in morning. he's just rang after hearing lots of horror stories and is now panicking about buying it! i know nothing about them so any advise for him please. cheers

The head gaskets go and the cylinder liners then move round and rub on the head, they can cost a lot of money to put right.

K series engine does suffer from the above problem but a mod(steel dowels i think) stops this IIRC. I'd be more worried about the IRD unit and Viscous prop when these let go(and they all do) it's big bucks as LR only sell unit's not parts to repair the units rolleyes
