I have been told that the ecu on the jap cars differs slightly and gives a few more horses than the UK cars, don't know if this is true or not tho.......
Not true. The ECUs on the 114bhp 1.6s are exactly the same.
On some Japanese cars, especially Imprezas and the like, it is true though. Mainly due to them being mapped for the Japanese 100Ron fuel.
Up to 1993 jap import 1.6 and UK spec 1.6 engines were identical.
The 1.6 was discontinued in 1993 and replaced with a 1.8.
In 1994 the 88bhp 1.6 was introduced in UK but was never sold in Japan where they just had the 1.8.
So if it's a 1.6 up to 1993 it'll be the 114bhp engine. If it's a 1.6 from 1994 it'll be 88bhp regardless of the market it was sold in.
The 1.8 engine also went through a few changes. At various stages in it's life it's output went through 128, 130 and 133bhp though I'm not sure in which order. I think it started with 130, went down to 128 after some emission control changes and back up to 133 later in it's life though I could have that in the wrong order.
