I'm in between services again, last time I had the oil and filter changed but is there any real need to do this or am I just wasting money that is better spent on something else? (petrol!)

I'm aware of the various discussions over oil choice and that minerals degrade after 3000 miles but synthetics last longer etc. Just looking for a poll really!

I'm topping up with Mobil 1 Motorsport 15-50. What would you do?

I can't see the point at all. It's a short service interval anyway and you're using a quality oil. Changing at 3000 miles seems a waste of money to me.

I'm with Andy on this one - mines changed every service at 6k - which for me is pretty much twice a year anyway.

My 450 gets through about 3/4 per 1000 miles so she gets a partial oil change between services just by topping up ;-)

I never get to 6000 in a year so just have the service anyway every 12 months, so you could say I am changing the oil every 5000 miles....

Same here. It gets changed every year or about 5000 miles. Or if I have just been touring and the oil has worked very hard, 2 weeks in the south of France for instance.

I get the oil changed every 6000 miles, which is about twice a year. If I was a low mileage user - 3000 per year, I would be inclined to change more frequently, like once a year.

That's a good point, both my cars seem to have very regular oil 'changes' if that's the case. Maybe I won't bother.

I dont disagree with anyone changing at 6k miles.

I change mine at 3k using Silkolene 10W50 Pro S. At 3k miles the oil in my car is pretty dark.

For what it is worth, read RPi's website re oils. One of the most important functions of oil is to remove deposits from the engine. Dark/black oils are going to be less effective at removing deposits. Engine longevity is dependent to a clean engine internally.

For what it is worth.

Have to say,i also change mine every 6 months, and i do 5-6k miles a year.Obviously there has to be a cost compromise of some sort, otherwise we would all change it every week!I just like my pride and joy to have the best i can afford.I also have a Major service every 6k/12 mths, and that way everything is always tip top,and all fluids kept fresh.I have gone back to Mobil1 15/50 in the engine, and use Redline MTL in the gearbox, and Redline heavy shockproof in the diiff.
Because i use a local garage, and not a TVR stealer,my annual running costs are still far less than 'normal' servicing only,at TVR rates

Mike, I thought you were a Pro-S or royal purple lad. Why the change?

As soon as i switched to using the pro-s i started using significantly more oil.Theres nothing to say the change was the reason for the increased consumption whatsoever, but i always had very low consumption with the Mobil1 15w/50,so thats why i went back.At this stage its too early to say for sure if the consumption is back to how it used to be,but in another month or so i will know for sure.

I have a FilterMag magnet wrapped around a Baldwin (B4 IIRC) oil filter.. I change the filter every 6 months.. and the oil (Castrol syn 10w60) every 12.. however the oil, even after 12 months and 3-5kmiles still looks rather clean.

I always make a point of cutting the filter open to see how much fine metal gets trapped...even after 6 months theres always a thin film of metal filings.

How queer, mine did the exact opposite. To be fair mine never used much anyway, but it certainly used less Pro-s. Will see what happens with my new engine

Change mine about every 5 - 6k, which equates to a couple of times a year. Another one who takes note of the colour of the oil, and it certainly does get darker quickly past 3.5/4k. It also gets a bit stinky but I can't make my mind up whether that's from fuel contamination or ring blow-by of combustion gases. I'm erring toward the latter as it still does decent fuel muileage (at least as good as they ever do) and the oil doesn't seem at all 'diluted'... (as far as I can tell).

Well, I've been known to change at 2k miles. For the minimal cost of oil and filter change [if doing yourself] it's peace of mind. Plus, gives an idea of what's going on inside as this is how I once discovered that the rocker pads on my last Griff' were disintegrating.

Mine was changed last year (Jan 06) after 1000 miles and again earlier on this month after 1400 miles.

I do such low mileages in it, it gets it's yearly service every 1000-1500 miles.
