ok so when i got my ps2 online the first game i played was burnnout 3: takedown

and when you start it up it says that "you mat see european players using a diffrent TV standard" and it says something about how i can't play w/ them

wat is this diffrent standard?

and does it aply to other games?? (what i'm mainly talking about is SW Battle Front 1 and 2, scince those are pretty much the only games i play online)

b/c that would stink not to be able to play games with some fellow PH's

Probably people playing in PAL:60 mode i presume, which unless your tv is so old it is still made of wood shouldn't be a problem

I would also presume the game to be crap in that it is synchronising to the video refresh rate, rather than some other time base, thus you wouldn't be able to join if you running in PAL:50.

It might be the other way round too, e.g. you playing in pal:60 and them playing in pal:50, i remember that Burnout gives you the option to choose which mode you want when it starts up.

The US runs 480i and 480p (NTSC) while Europe runs 576i (PAL) - i play with people from all over the world on race driver three so its probably specific to the game

Also the French used to have SECAM, as did Iron Curtain era Russia (as it was so obsuce nobody else could see it or transmit it). I think the French have well and truely given this up though, and I'm not even sure the PS2 can provide a signal for it.

Resolution or video signal shouldn't make a difference for online games, i would imagine the problem is down to refresh rate.

It used to be the case that in the conversion from US 60Hz to UK 50Hz a lot of games companies would just run the refresh rate slower. UK games could be around 20% slower than their US counterparts due to lazy conversions.

Doesn't seem to be as much of an issue these days though.

Yeah, depends on how the software is developed, on the ps2 the joypad refresh rate is tied into the video refresh rate, not sure it'll make a big difference but for fast button mashing games, like beat em ups, it could make the gameplay differ slightly. I remember that being the case for Street Fighter 2 many moons ago.
